I wanted to have an "outline" but my FI still wanted it to be a bit loose. So we asked a friend who was in a dance group in college to help us put some moves together and then she wrote them down at each timing so we could practice. We only danced for about 1:35 and that was perfect for us. Ours was super fun, with a lift and other fun moves. We forgot some of the moves she had taught us by the time we did our final rehearsals a couple of days before but made some stuff up. It was nice to go out and have something planned, but we also had an upbeat song, Somebody Like You by Keith Urban.
If you're nervous about it I'd say ask a friend to help or take a lesson. The first dance should be fun, not stressful!
Our first dance was a swing dance to Leonard Cohen's, "Dance Me to the End of Love." We took one lesson, practiced on our own, and got help from friends who are really into dancing. We weren't exactly experts, but it's amazing how many missteps can be covered by two long dresses. Plus, if you smile and look adoringly at each other, no one will be doing a professional critique of your dancing skills.
We chose our song, took two dance lessons and practiced the days before the wedding. It wasn't epic, but it was cute and we did a mega dip at the end.
Our wedding isn't here yet, but we're doing a surprise/fun dance. We're taking lessons (only done 2 so far) and practicing as much as we can. I found a good deal for a dance studio of 4 lessons for $240. We want it to look great so we wanted to find professional help for it. :-) I'm excited to see what it'll look like on video lol
I wanted to do a coreographed dance but DH wasn't all for it. He didn't want us to look rehearsed and just wanted to enjoy the day with me and take a moment with eash other. Well I convinced him otherwise and we took private lessons for six weeks. we had so much fun learning. But the second we stepped on the dance floor I forgot everything! I got nervous and didn't even know how to do a simple box. He talked me through the dance but looking back on it, I would decide not to do a coreographed dance. I was concentrating so much and looked miserable.

To the already married bees, can you please tell me about your first dance? Did you take dance lessons & pratice your butt off? Did you just do a couple of practices before the big day? Or did you not practice @ all & just let whatever happen, happen?
I see videos of these very practiced dances and the couple looks wonderful. But I just don't think that type of thing is for us. I guess I'm worried about being boring.
What type of approach did you take to your first dance?
