I think 1.5 ct will be perfect! That’s what we were going to get, until a friend of the family who is a jeweler offered us this 2.02 ct stone for a steal. Size 5 finger, for reference, since you are thinking of going larger.

Congrats on your upcoming engagement!  You don’t say what shape the diamond is (different shapes face up very differently in the same carat weight).  But regardless of shape, a 1.5ct diamond should be a very nice on your hand I wouldn’t consider it to be too small.  Here is my 1.85ct mrb (7.85mm) set in a 1.8mm solitaire setting (softened knife edge makes it appear thinner) on my size 5.5-5.75 finger.

    I have a 1.4 carat on a size 5, and I think it’s perfect.

If you’re already worried that it’s too small, I say pick a bigger one now.  Most people feel shrinkage pretty soon.

    Here’s my 7.5mm round on a size 5.75.  I wish I had gotten an 8mm.

This is my 7mm (1.25ct equivalent) on size 5.5:

I also had an 8mm solitaire (2ct equivalent), but I sold it because I didn’t think it looked good on my hand.

I’m a size 4. First picture is a 2 carat solitaire and second is a 1.5 carat with accents.

My solitaire is a 1.3 on a size 5.5 finger, along with my grandma’s wedding band (almost 100 years old!). I could “upgrade” it to whatever size I want, but I like the look of mine. For me, rings that are too big seem like they would get in the way and draw lots of attention. I love mine, even 16 years later! I’m so happy I didn’t do anything trendy and went with a classic solitaire.

cq123 :  It looks like you’re allergic to your ring. It’s beautiful though!

There is a website where you can play around and see how different stone sizes and shapes will look on your finger size. Just make sure to change the settings to your screen size. I personally think 1.5 would not be too small on a 5.5 (I’m a 5.5 too!) but there’s nothing like going into a store and trying them on to see what you think!

Here’s my 8.5x6mm oval (which would be about 1.3 carats)
