My Darling Husband is having a SA done as well. We dropped it off Thursday morning and my doctor said we could expect results “mid week”. I figure if I haven’t heard anything by Thursday I will call. 🙂

Good luck, I’m glad your labs came back with good news!

@RoyalLime:  Yay for Post 1000!

We haven’t done our SA yet, so I’m not sure how long it typically takes to get the results back.  It probably depends to a large extent on your lab.  Good luck!

Sorry to hijack, seeing as I have no answer to your question…but can I ask how long you’ve been TTC before resorting to SA?

I’d like to have my Husband do it but I’m not sure if it would be considered too soon.

How do you go about having an SA? Do I need a referal to a specialist? Can I do it privately and pay out of pocket (in Canada)? FYI we are on month 8 of TTC.

Also, a side question – since I had a CP a few months ago, does that automatically mean my DH’s swimmers are good?

we went through this a few months ago.  we had DH’s results the next day, but it may just depend on the lab that you went to.

@MrsOats:  We’re in Canada too and our regular doctor knows we haven’t had any success TTC. He was ready to give us a lab order for a semen analysis anytime after 12 months of trying (we don’t need to see a specialist before we get the SA).

I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to ask your doctor if he would give you a lab recquistion for the SA, although if you’ve had a CP (I’m sorry Cry) then you know you can get pregnant and it might not hurt to wait a few more months and see what happens. Just my 2 cents–you need to do what you feel comfortable and happy with!

@RoyalLime:  Wanted to let you know that my Dr called back with my DH’s results yesterday! We took the test in Thurs AM and she called yesterday, so give it a couple days and i’m sure you’ll have answers. My heart sank when she called, my first gut reaction was just to be begging that something wasn’t wrong with him too!!

She didn’t give me the details like how many million of them he had, but she said that everything looked great. She said that the only thing that came back on the report was something that totally wasn’t an issue but she had to bring it up since it came back “below normal” (by a whole 1% ;)!) was that the “heads” on the sperm on average, 60% are “normal”. My husbands came back at 59%. She said it wasn’t even worth mentioning but there it was. Not a concern. She said they look for things like sperm with small heads, enlarged heads, pointed heads…. no heads(?!??) and the average amount for perfectly “normal” heads is 60%. His were 59%. Not at all concerned. Anyways, that was good news. She is sending in our info to the specialist and hoping to get a consult in soon.

Keep us posted!

@MrsOats:  like a previous poster mentioned above, you should be able to get a requisition from your family doctor (yours or his!). My doctor did one for my Darling Husband and it wasn’t an issue. If you’ve had a CP before (I’m so sorry), it sounds like his swimmers are good to me! But, if you want peace of mind, certainly no harm in getting it done. If you are in Canada it’s covered, just get the requisition and take it to a lab that does the SA test (not all of them do). 🙂

@RoyalLime:  Fair enough! I know my DH’s results will be at our consult and I’m sure can request a copy then if we want to have it just in case. I think if there was anything to be worried about I would have asked to come and grab a copy, but thankfully that didnt need to happen. Definitely keep us posted! Best of luck!

@RoyalLime:  My Darling Husband always had his done at my RE’s office, so that probably changes the turn around time.  He dropped them off in the morning and we always had the results by the end of the day.  When they were good, they’d email me the results with what his numbers are vs. what’s normal which was SUPER duper helpful.  We had some SA’s that were awful and they’d always call with those.  I guess when there’s nothing in the SA it’s easier to just call vs. create a document with a bunch of zeroes on it.

Wishing you and your hubs the best of luck and a stellar SA!!!

@RoyalLime:  Well, our process had more twists and turns than most.  We had both female factor (I have PCOS and therefor don’t ovulate on my own, thus getting us to the RE in the first place) and male factor (which we discovered through the first SA).  Darling Husband had a blockage that had to be fixed surgically before we could even start treating my stuff.  It took injections and IUI to get us pregnant.  All in all, it took about 2.5 years.  But, as I said, we had unique circumstances.

The SA is the easiest and most non-invasive way to test for issues.  Testing your tubes is usually the next step assuiming the SA comes back a-ok.  At least, that was my experience.
