They will get more than enough toys, clothes etc.

I almost always choose one of two things:

-a book- to start a library which every child needs

-a share of stock to grow wealth for him and which the parents can use later to teach about money

Maybe consider getting something like a baby toiletries set with bath Aquaphor bath soap/shampoo, Aquaphor lotion, baby oil, and diaper rash cream (Burts Bees is non-staining).  Maybe some diapers and wipes too.  Really, we loved getting that stuff because you always run out eventually!

If they’re environmental types you can wrap it up in a reusable grocery bag (they make them with designs now).  We also would have welcomed cleaning stuff (like Method Play Clean spray) for her toys, gift certificates to play centers or Gymboree, or gift certificates to somewhere like Target or Walmart.

The things we DIDN’T want: Desitin (that stuff is impossible to remove!), toys, too many clothes (one outfit was ok, but our closet is super packed), and big stuff that we have no place for (like a walker).
