We had a little ball pit at my daughter’s first birthday.  You can get them on amazon for like $15 and maybe another $20 for the balls.  They have some with tunnels and tents and stuff too.  She liked it then, and she would still enjoy it now at 2.5.  Plus it makes for cute birthday photos.

This is not really a party idea, but something I wish I’d read about when my son was young….

Buy a cheap adult small tee-shirt, then photograph your wee one every year in that shirt.

for my son, we did Wild One (it was wild animals theme).

for my daughter we did Winter ONEderland .  Her birthday is december.

both parties were mostly adults for the 1st birthday so we didn’t have games.

My son’s first birthday party was just this last Saturday! It’s amazing how quickly this year went!

Anyway, when is your son’s party going to be? We had about 40 people over to our house and the “theme” was gingerbread and hot chocolate. We had a good mix of kids and adults so I made a hot chocolate bar which was super easy and a huge hit! Then I made gingerbread cookies and we had cake. That was it! It was super simple and inexpensive, which was very helpful since his birthday is literally right after Christmas. Everyone seemed to have a great time 🙂

ETA: Also our son’s Christmas present was a mini ball pit so we had that set up for him and the other kiddos to play around in. Even the slightly older kids seemed to have a lot of fun.

I’ve always planned on having a lumberjack theme for our little man’s first birthday. My hubby is basically a lumberjack himself so the shoe fits lol.
