Congrats! How far along are you? I’m wondering when this ultrasound occurs for most people:)

SLOBee :  I would be interested in knowing this answer as well. my doc’s office said they wont see me until 8-10 weeks. I will be 9 weeks when I go in. But a lot of women in my March Moms group have already had one by 5-8 weeks!

kaitlynaubrey01 :  every OB is different.  There is actually no medical reason to do a scan this early unless you have irregular periods and need to date the pregnancy (or obviously a medical reason like bleeding, severe cramping, etc.).  So for that fact, many offices will not even do one without a specific reason.  The only standard ultrasound (given to everyone) is the 20 week anatomy scan.  Others (like NT scan) you can opt in for and everything else would be medically required (like follow up scans, scans if you are overdue, etc).  Sometimes you can ask for an early scan and your OB will be fine with it, but they might make you aware that your insurance may not cover it.

Congratulations! I’m 17 weeks now and it feels like just yesterday we were hearing the heartbeat for the first time – I remember how exciting it was!

The “not being able to concentrate” thing doesn’t go away either. ๐Ÿ™‚

So happy for you!

topeonyornottopeony :  yes, in the US.  Like I said, they’re all different.  The only real standard is 20 week anatomy scan.  12-13 weeks is the NT scan but those are usually optional (opt-in) because they’re prenatal screening and some people do not want them.  Really, I’m guessing since they’re not medically indicated it’s just a waste of $/resources so some prefer not to do them unless necessary or requested.

With my first, I would only have a 20 week scan.  But I did opt in for the NT scan.  Glad I did since I ended up being 3.5 weeks ahead of what we thought (which actually meant I could not do the NT scan after all).  I also had a 40 week scan because I was overdue.  With #2 she said she could give me a 10 week scan just warned me sometimes insurances only covered 1 scan like that but I said yes and got one at 10 weeks.  Since I did the NIPT and not a NT scan so I did not have another until 20 weeks.  I am having one at 26weeks only because they could not see the heart very well at 20 weeks due to position.  So it will end up varying anyway.

Just remember, they used to do no (or very few) ultrasounds at all.  My mother never had one with me and the only reason they gave her one with her second was because she was getting really big (then found out it was twins)
