I am thinking that both the top and the bottom would be awesome, and none of that awkward moving of tables while people are around them.  If the grandma’s want to get their boogie on, I am sure there will be some fine gentlemen there who will be kind enough to help them up the stairs.  You might even ask some friends to be designated for this duty.

We had our reception at a restaurant that was split into two levels, however our party was pretty big (225 guests). We had about 40 people sit upstairs, and we also had one of our two bars, and the photobooth upstairs, with the dance floor on the first level. For us it worked out fine. After dinner people will move around anyways, so moving around between one floor vs. two really didn’t seem to make a big difference. If you get both levels for the same price, I think you might as well take the extra space!
