So we are making the final decisions on our reception food. Our wedding is at 1 PM and our reception is at 2 PM. We were planning on a luncheon reception, however a few people have pointed out that at 2 PM some people may have already had lunch and maybe we should just go with appetizers/hors d’oeuvres instead. I checked with our caterer and was surprised to find that I can do a 10 appetizer set up(5 hot, 5 cold) for virtually the same price as we were budgetting for the luncheon. So should I do the lunch or go with the apps? Here’s the 2 different menus
Deli Sliced Roast Beef, Breast of Turkey & Honey Glazed Ham on Cocktail Buns
Assorted Sliced Domestic Cheeses & Condiments + Scalloped Potatoes, Mixed Greens with Homemade Poppyseed Dressing, Fruit Compote Salad, Corn Relish Salad
mini cocktail quiche
sausage stuffed mushrooms
hot spinach & artichoke dip
cold layered mango crab spread
chipotle shrimp cups
fresh vegetable canapes

We are doing a heavy apps menu much like your example but with desserts also. Our wedding ceremony is scheduled for 2 PM so reception is at approx. 3 PM. But close enough. 🙂
I always prefer the appetizer set-up at other weddings at this time, because in general I eat before I go if it’s scheduled any later than 1:30.

@AmeliaBedelia: We aren’t doing a dessert bar, but I am having a cake, and we are also doing a lemonade stand with this, with 4 different kinds of lemonade. No alcohol at the reception, as it is in our church social hall and they do not allow alcohol on the premises-that is for the “after” party.

I love having the variety of little appetizers, it feels fancy and special.

I know at 2pm I would be expecting to eat. But your appetizer menu sounds really good, like it better than lunch. I would just make sure you had enough pieces to fill people as I’m sure people will eat a little more since it may be lunch time for them.

I would assume that I wouldn’t have been able to eat lunch getting ready and commuting to your wedding. So I would want lunch at 2.

I’m doing a church reception at 2 as well! Our wedding’s at 1:30, and we’re just sending people straight there.
I’m doing heavy appetizers. I figure most people will eat lunch before the wedding anyway. There will be desserts, just cookies and brownies or something along with the cake.

I love the appetizer idea but what I’m concerned about is people who may not eat before the wedding because they are expecting to be fed a meal.

It depends on how much apps each person gets. I do like the appetizers you listed above but if each person only gets a few they may still be hungry. So i voted for luncheon instead.

I’m with people who say appetizers sound great as long as there is plenty for everyone so they won’t be hungry
