- Wedding: October 2015
I can’t believe I can finally post on this board and say that I’M ENGAGED! I was #23 on the waiting list and had been there for about two years. My fiance (EEEEK!) totally surprised me by proposing sooner than I had expected and had sooooo many people in on the secret to make it so amazingly special!
Fiance (!!!!) and I have been together for just over two years but have known each other for four. We were long distance for most of our relationship until I got an adjunct position that made it possible for me to move into his house on the state park where he works as ranger. The past few months have been outstanding, living with my best friend. We’ve also taken up horseback riding lessons together and are good friends with our instructor.
Oh boy, did Fiance ever get get me good! We had never set a firm timeline but knew we wanted to get married and were just waiting on his finances to get a little more established. We stayed with my parents over Thanksgiving, and it turns out that he and my dad stayed up almost all night having “The Marriage Talk” while I was asleep. When my parents and I had dinner together a few weeks later while on a business trip, he outright lied and said that he and Fiance hadn’t had that talk, because he knew I was suspicious. Dad has a history of having an excellent poker face when it comes to major surprises, so in hindsight, I’m not surprised.
Also during Thanksgiving, Fiance plotted with his sister to get an heirloom ring from her that he later used in making my ring. The only problem is that I was always with him when we were hanging out, so Future Sister-In-Law and Future Brother-In-Law finally managed to sneak it into his pocket while my back was turned!
Fast forward to mid-December. Fiance and I head out for a date to celebrate our two year anniversary and look at some rings. Turns out this was a deflection. I thought we were just beginning the ring search, when in fact all of his extra errands in town “for work” were him visiting the jeweler and placing the order for my ring setting!
He had intended to propose on my birthday, but my ring wasn’t ready in time. While he was at work, he hid the heirloom ring and my ring in the gun safe, so everyone at the park was in on his plans.
It happened last Sunday, so six days ago. I hadn’t noticed Fiance acting any different when we were getting ready to go to our riding lesson. The only thing that was different was that he asked for my approval on the shirt he wore, and it was a little nicer than usual for riding. I didn’t think much of it, and he also mentioned that he was riding a different horse than usual (his name is Phantom) and that this horse gets along with the one I ride (her name is Sneakers). Once again, I nod and go along with it.
The lesson proceeds as usual. I notice that our instructor has her cell phone and tablet with her and is taking videos as we practice different skills, but once again, I don’t think this is unusual. We had talked about taking some videos of our practice sessions to track our progress, so I’m just happy that we’re finally doing it. Towards the end of the lesson, Fiance challenges me to a little race where we would take turns riding to the other end of the arena and back, fastest time wins. He had secretly wanted me to win because he was on a smaller horse, but I lost because mine refused to go faster than a trot. Hah!
Luckily, this doesn’t faze Fiance too much. He rides up so our horses are nose-to-tail and says, “Well, you still win the wager, so I should give you something.” At first I think, ‘Um…we didn’t make any wagers.’ Then he starts fishing around in his pocket! This last for a few seconds that feel like eternity! And then to make the situation just hilarious, his horse starts rubbing his face against my leg to scratch an itch! I laugh and scratch his face nervously, still confused. Fiance pulls his horse’s face away, and he gets out of formation…
…at the same time I see THE RING appear from his pocket!
My heart starts hammering, and I’m thinking, ‘No way…surely not!’ I look over at our instructor, and she has a complete poker face while filming everything on her tablet. Fiance rides his horse back over, grinning nervously, shows me the ring, and asks me to marry him! (Turns out he chose this particular horse because Sneakers tolerates him standing close to her and is small enough that it’s still like Fiance is on one knee. Adorable!)
I’m completely surprised! First thing I say is, “WHAT?!” Then some nervous laughing/almost crying. Then the sane part of my brain that’s focused on not falling off the horse also reminds me to say yes, so I say yes! We kiss while on horseback, and then we dismount to hug/kiss/freak out.
Without further ado…PICTURES!
After I say yes:
Kissing without risk of falling off the horse:
THE RING! The center stone is an heirloom from his great-grandmother. Just over a half carat, SI1 clarity, nearly colorless. The setting is custom and exactly what I wanted: engraving on the band, milgrain, sidestones, and so much detail! It sparkles like crazy!
Another view. Pardon my dry, beat-up hands:
I’m so excited! We’re already planning for October 2015 so we can have our dream autumn wedding! I can’t wait to share everything with you wonderful Bees!
