I finally got to see my dress yesterday and was so excited! But now, not so much 🙁 I actually think it looks worse on me now than before alterations. Taking in the bust so that it fits properly seems to accentuate how tiny I am in the boob area and make my hips look bigger — oh well not much I can do about that I guess (cups are already sewn in). My main concern is how it hangs on me. I know it’s not ironed, but there seem to be ripples all over the place near th seams, and yet my seamstress (who is allegedly one of the best in town and specializes in couture gowns) says that it has to have some “give” and that’s just how the fabric is (it’s shantung silk) so she says there’s nothing that can be done about it. I guess I can live with that, but I still don’t like how the bottom hangs. I swear the hem is uneven, even though she argued with me about that too. But shouldn’t it hang nicer than this?
This is a Romona Keveza dress that was way over my budget, but I loved it because of the luxerious fabric and the fact that I thought it would have nice sturcture and fit like a glove. It does not have a slip or crindoline built into it, but when I bought it, I was standing on a pedastal and loved how it hanged and sort of pleated out at the bottom. But now that it’s actually hemmed to fit me, it seems like the fabric keeps getting trapped between my legs and doesn’t flare out at the bottom like I want it to.
Should I get a crinoline/slip? Does anyone know if you can buy a mermaid/trumpet slip that does not have a bunch of “poof” included in it? If I add poof, it’ll be too short for sure.
This is the second dress I had to buy due to a bad measurement/bad alteratiosn the first time and I’m just sick to my stomach. My wedding is in 30 days and I refuse to buy a third dress!
Compare — When I bought it:
I actually like it here overall (still think hem is off though) — but I think it only looks flared because I had my legs in a position to make it look that way:
After my fitting, I went over to another bridal shop to look for a different belt, and ended up trying a similar dress on so I could see how the belt would look (to add to my woes, the sample dress on the right that I tried on costs over $2000 less than mine – makes me sick!!!!!) ANYWAY – that dress had a very light slip built into it, which seemed to help with the flare/movement when I walked. Do you think I could add one to mine without totally throwing off the hem?
Sorry for the long post, bees – I’m just really sad that this isn’t coming together how I hoped it would and kinda freaking out. Thanks 🙁

I think you can add a bit of a crinoline slip to yours to make it puff out a bit more.
I’m also a little lacking in the chest area and had a push-up cup built into my dress, gives me a bit of extra ompf/lift to fill out the top a bit more and give a very slight (and tasteful) hint of cleavage.

Thanks. I do have a pushup cup in there already actually! I’m that small….always have been, but then breastfed my baby for a year and now it’s even worse. I think I’ll just have to accept the top looking that way. I hope I can find a slip with no “poof” … no luck so far.

Your dress is super gorgeous. I love the material. Don’t worry the thing about wedding dresses is that you love em when u buy them, then you spend months tearing them apart and critiquing them in alterations, then you love them on your wedding day.
I see what you are saying about the flare- do you think it needs to be taken in a bit at the thighs? Sure, buy a slip or crinoline and try it out why not?
i see what u are saying about the bust. It looks fine but I see what you are saying. I struggled w the alterations of my sweetheart neckline too. Compared to the sample your bust line has more pointed points at the top of the sweethearts. I would almost recommend leaving it as is tho because in my experience the more you alter the bust the more it gets screwed up.

I think you can add a slip/crinline to yours to make it go more mermaid-y. You can always adjust your shoes if you really need to if the slip makes it feel too short.
Additionally…I might see if she can take it in just a smidge on the side of your thighs to help give it that curve as well. Don’t make it too tight or your won’t be able to sit. LOL
It’s a beautiful dress. You’ll be a stunning bride!

UPDATE (as if anyone cares, lol!) But my final fitting today went better! And I did add the slip and a different belt – I think it helps?!! What you think? Still on the fence about the belt — if anyone sees this and thinks it cheapens the look, please tell me! I love the crystals on the original (it was more expensive), but I just wasn’t loving how it looked in the back with the ribbon.
It still needs pressing but overall I think I’m happy! One week to go 🙂
Thanks for helping me out, everyone!

Hi Bee. You look stunning! Did you lose weight? You look slimmer all around and fabulous from every angle. I wasn’t a fan of the ribon tied in the back either. You made a good call on changing that belt. I’m so excited for you and your wedding! be sure to post a recap!

Thank you! Nice comments are so reassuring 🙂 I’m a bit insecure!
angelaw2g: No, I didn’t! I really think the new belt makes a difference! And I think having it flare out more helps too. I’m relieved because I really felt like I looked less slim before and I didn’t care for how it was hanging on me! Still wish I could do something to give some “oomp” to my chest but there’s no room to add any more padding. I will definitlely post a recap, thank you for wanting one! That’s so sweet! Can’t believe we’re only a week away!
