I think it is kind of short.  I had a 5 hour reception, and it just flew by.  I only had 100 guests and I feel like it took me a good chunk of that just to talk to anyone.  Any shorter, my husband and I wouldn’t have gotten on the dance floor- and dancing with my family and friends was the most fun part of the wedding!

At a venue I’m sure 3 1/2 hours feels short…we’re having a backyard wedding and I’m secretly hoping everyone is pretty much gone by 9 (ceremony starts at 6:30 and food by 7) ha!

weddingmaven:  Sorry, a correction.  It’s four hours plus cocktail hour for an evening wedding around here,  so more like five altogether. I’ve been to many full blown afternoon and daytime weddings that were three hours plus another hour for cocktails, as well as casual, buffet, or cocktail affairs that were shorter than that.
