I 100% understand where you are coming from. My Fiance started with the best intent by getting my a .70 carat with a fancy setting. I switched out the setting to something plain and upgraded the 2nd diamond center stone to a 1.00 carat. I personally, did not notice a difference in center stone size from  .70 to a 1.00. I know the sweet spot is .90 for getting the best bang for your buck.

Also, I would def. recommend to be open with your SO. Being open and honest in a relationship will always be important. I was slightly disapointed in my Ering so I spoke to my Fiance about it found something else.
