I would also recommend going to an independent seamstress – just make sure you get references.  I lucked out because the store I got my dress at was AMAZING (Becker’s Bridal in Toronto, I would highly recommend them), and they gave a list of the seamstresses they work with, and guarantee their work.  I trusted their recommendations because I liked working with them in general.  So I picked the seamstress closest to me, and she was amazing.  She actually works at the Vera Wang bridal boutique, so I figured if she’s good enough for Vera Wang, she’s good enough for me.  She charged $120 for taking in bodice and cups, and doing the bustle. She also charged my mom $120 for very extensive alterations on her dress (length, bodice, straps, adding zipper). Considering I paid $100 to alter a simple bridesmaid dress at a store, that’s pretty good in comparison.  Anyway, my point is to find a good seamstress with good recommendations and go to her instead of doing it at the store.

ps. if anyone in Toronto area wants the contact info for my seamstress, PM me
