Hey gals, So I never had a 3D/4D U/s with my first, but we are wanting to do one with this baby. I looked at the Info binder my doctors office gave me & it says that they suggest their 4d scans to be done between 26-32 weeks, best is 28-30…. So I called hoping to have it done before my first baby shower, and was told NO they want us to do it at 34 weeks now? So I called the other place that did our early gender scan, since i know the actual OB office’s have to be a little more rigid on their scans and such due to their patients, but this place is just an outpatient U/S place that specializes in them. They told me 30-34 weeks? So my paper says 26 is ok to do it (given to me by my OB) AND i had a friend just goto the same place and get her 4D at 28w and they told her that was the PRIME time to do it becuase the baby isn’t too big to be moving alot, and there is plenty of fluid, but when I call the same place they tell me something different?
I would prefer to get it sooner than later because I want to see her at this point (end of second trimester beginning of third) I feel like if I wait until 4 wks-ish before she is born, why not just wait those extra 4 weeks to see her and save $100? So my question to you gals is at what point did you do your 4d?

I had my 3D done at 19w5d, early but I wanted it for gender determination. In Canada, you can’t find out until you have your 20 week ultrasound (unless a tech blabs which is rare) and then you have to wait for the doctor to call you.
I’m glad I did it because the tech forgot to include the gender on my one to the doctor (although she did blab it was a girl b/c I told her I already knew).
I’m planning on having another done around 30 weeks 🙂

I had my 3D scan during my anatomy scan at 18 weeks. I didn’t know they we’re going to, but during the ultrasound the tech just flipped it into 3D mode for a couple of minutes.

I’m having an elective 3D at 18w5d because we’re going to be up visiting my DH’s friends and family in his hometown that weekend, and his best friend’s wife is an u/s tech and offered to sneak us in during her shift. We’re going to let her tell us the gender at that one. We felt it was more special that way, rather than waiting the extra week and a half to have a random nurse tell us. 🙂

My OB’s office does the US inhouse and her machine does 2D/3D/4D so I’ve gotten them starting 12 weeks when the US tech does my regular US. I think I’ve done 12w, 20w, and 32w (I was measuring large so an extra US was ordered) so far (I’m currently at 34w). I will say the 32w one looks the best out of all of them and you can definitely make out features. Hopefully, your baby isn’t a stinker like mine. In his 20w, he held his hands up to his face so it was way hard to get a good shot and then at 32w, he was hiding half his face with the placenta.

Ive had regular 2d at 5, 8. 12, and 20… and one away from the office at close to 17 for gender determination. I would prefer mine around 28-30!

I’m going to have a 3d sono (not at my regular obgyn but else where) at 24w 5d. The place I’m going to says the perfect time is 24-28 weeks.

@harperlynn: I had a 3D at 32 weeks, but it was only because I asked. My doctor ordered one for my ‘peace of mind.’ However, my practice does not normally do any US past 20 weeks unless there is reason for concern.

We are planning to have these done. They told us the best time was 28-30 weeks as well, before 28 the baby is still a bit scrawny/not filled out all the way, after 30 weeks they start to run out of space to move around and you may not get some of the angles of shots you want like a good facial picure. It basically depends on what you hope to see during your appt. If you want to see the baby moving a lot, possibly doing flips and turns, 26-28 weeks is best. If you want to get a good picture of what the baby’s facial features will look like at birth, 28-30 is best.

@emersynsmommy35: Do it between 28 and 30 weeks because by that point baby is active but packing on the fat so s/he looks more like a baby than a fetus.
