Some of you may recall that I have been fretting over alterations for awhile. I am petite (5’2″) and didnt want the detail at the bottom of my dress chopped off. I am wearing 5.25″ heels and the dress when it arrived was STILL 4-5 inches too long. Typically, hem alterations on this dress involve “hooking” up the tiers so that they are spaced closer together but, I REALLY wanted to leave the bits of lace between the tiers and think spacing the ruffles closer together just makes the dress look “busy”. After a great deal of discussion, the bridal salon suggested cutting off the bottom ruffle of the dress. This ruffle is REALLY pretty – see pre-alterations photo #1 – this layer has beautiful opaque detailing that the other ruffles lack. The salon’s only other suggestion was to chop the dress at the waist and bring up the entire dress however this would affect the all-over lace pattern on the bodice and tiers would have started at my waist instead of my hips which I think would have looked really wierd.
So, in the end I choose to lose the bottom ruffle an I think it turned out very well. I still need a few more alterations to take in the bust (even AFTER adding padding!!!). You’ll also notice that the sash is missing because it is being altered – we are combining a VERA sash and a LAZARO sash. When I post RECAP photos in a few weeks you’ll see the finished product.
What do you think?
PRE ALTERATIONS – JUST LAZARO SASH
PRE-ALTERATIONS w/ SASH FROM BACK SHOWING VERA DETAIL
MID ALTERATIONS – HEM FINISHED / BUST PINNED / SASH MISSING
AND, FINALLY – UNBUSTLED
