@36goldfish:  We went on what was more of an afternoon trip to Assisi, (as in St. Francis/nativity scnees). It wasn’t very “hopping” but it was clean, picturesque and fun 🙂

I did a summer semester in Florence and was easily able to travel to Pisa by ~1 hour train.

Also you can see 2 beautiful little ancient cities of Sienna and San Gimigiano in one day by bus.

Tuscany is gorgeous! Have fun!

Go to Cerveteri! There’s an amazing UNESCO world heritage site there.

I found Pisa to be a waste of time. It’s the only thing from my 6 1/2 weeks in Italy I wish I had skipped.

@36goldfish:  We made daytrips to Pisa by train and the Chianti wine region by bus while staying in Florence.

We stayed in Florence and did some day trips to Tuscany – Sangiminiano and Siena- through caf tours. We booked online (while we were in Venice, took the high speed rail) the night before and the tours meet right near the trainstation in Florence. There are a bunch of tour companies and they seem to have the pick up in the same area.
