And the world has conspired against us celebrating it. Sorry to be a downer… here’s the story:
Tomorrow will be 5 years since our first date.
The place that we wanted to take a mini-vacation is booked for the next month (and then it’ll be too cold there to be worth the trip).
The weather here has suddenly taken a dive, so it’s too cold to rent bikes or drive to a park for a picnic and hiking, like we did on our first anniversary.
The restaurant where we had our first date shut down a year ago.
And my SO just came down with a horrible cold.
So I’ve gone from thinking that my SO was planning to propose, to think of something special to do that won’t make him more miserable (Engagement Chicken soup?). Tourists, the weather, the economy, and viruses are all out to get us. I’m a little teary-eyed and disappointed, but I’m determined to make the best of it.
At least my gift to him is fantastic… excellent seats to see Bob Dylan (his all-time favorite), tucked into a custom-printed card: the cover is a picture of us from each year that we’ve been together.
So he was pretty sleepy and mostly just wanted to watch football. But I made the best of it, dressed up, and made this chicken noodle soup from scratch. And it was amazing. He said it was “so good,” and then a bit later, said “I mean, like way good.” Which is high praise, haha. Now I just have to get the tumeric stains out of everything in the kitchen.
And I found out that he made reservations to my favorite restaurant for tonight! It’s a super classy French restaurant, and way out of our normal budget. We went there for our anniversary last year, and it was just… amazing. We’re leaving in about an hour. I can’t tell you how excited I am.
(Although I have to say, I was a little tempted to tell him that he could cancel the reservation and have half of the money for a ring, haha.)
