So my fi and I are booked for 1st September 2018 (495 days to go!), and while everything has been pretty smooth sailing so far as we’ve got plenty of time to make decisions and plenty of ‘wedding downtime’, I was wondering if anyone had already had any vendor surprises with being over a year out?
For us, we (ok, I) really wanted a close-up magician for the drinks reception – someone to get groups mingling and something a little fun. I’ve seen them at wedding fairs and just loved them. We ended up contacting 14 magicians at the beginning of this year before finding one that was free on our date!
The other surprise has been florists – I have contacted about 8, received replies from 4, quotes from 2, and sat down with another one over a week ago who still hasn’t sent us a quote. It’s almost like they don’t want to take our money haha.
What wedding planning/vendor surprises have you had early in the process?

I would give them a little more time before writing them off as not wanting your business. It is wedding season right now and some vendors have multiple weddings a week from now until the fall and are incredibly busy.

I also had the experience of not hearing back from vendors. This included venues, DJs, and photographers. I submitted to their inquiry box and never heard back from half! This was months ago. It worked out ok, I love the vendors I did get!

hawkeyebride2be : I first emailed florists over a month ago so I’m not holding much hope on the ones that didn’t acknowledge the message. The one we met with said we’d receive the quote in 2-3 days. I know things happen/life gets in the way, so we’re trying to put off making a decision with the other two florists till we hear back from this one as she was really enthusiastic at the meeting. As I keep reminding myself, we have plenty of time at least!
eurasianbee : I’m pretty confident it will all work out in the end – the magician we got was about £100 cheaper than the one we first contacted, and he’s just as magic! It sounds like it’s worked out well for you too 🙂

Nothing much has suprised me, yet. I booked all my major vendors over the last few months (venue, photo+video, hair+makeup, DJ, photo booth, transportation, house we’re renting for the weekend, catering, officient, florest, etc). I knew the earlier the better and my area seems to book fast as well.
I’m in a lull right now and haven’t done a ton since. Starting working on a few things here and there but nothing major, and probably nothing else will be done for a few months.

It’s surprised me how quickly we chose our venue (it was only the second one of three that we saw) and now I’m having a hard time choosing a photographer. I guess I was thinking this would be the easy part but I’m finding it so hard. There’s too many I like and the more I meet with the more I like – I think I need to just choose lol – anyone else?

I have found it so hard to find a ceremony venue for a civil wedding service that has capacity for 100 people! Even some of the parks we have enquired have been strict on numbers.
