Look into Portugal. It has wonderful restaurants and museums and architecture as well as beautiful beaches! We’re going for 10 days and staying at a 4 star hotel and a 5 star hotel. The flight + lodging was just under $5K.

While Italy or Greece might be a little steep, there are TONS of great beach-y places you can go for $5K! How do you feel about the Caribbean? St. Maarten has gorgeous beaches with a very European culture because one half of the island is owned by France and the other by the Netherlands. A pretty amazing experience, and it should be well within your budget.

I think $5k is a lot – you can definitely go somewhere beachy in Europe (Positano?  South of France?).  I would also look into Hawaii – cliche, but cliche for a lot of really wonderful reasons.

We had the same budget . Ours is an all-inclusive 8-night stay in Jamaica for just under $4k, including airfare. The only money we need is for souveniers – no tipping on the resort. You could always up the room category, stay longer, off-site excursions, etc.

Maybe something a little closer than Italy or Greece (which both sound amazing) because your airfare will kill your budget. Someday Fiance and I will get to the UK (I was there once for study abroad trip).

Great culture and food….depends what type of culture/food you prefer but off the top of my head I can think of

Brazil or other South American places
Several Caribbean islands – there are French ones, Spanish ones, English, Dutch. PP mentioned St. Maarten, a couple others that seemed very ‘cultured’ when where looking were Martinique, Trinidad & Tobago, and St. Lucia.

Just cause I’m bored 🙂 A quick search on flights from DC to Athens for two-weeks next April is $2400 which is half your budget, same to fly to Athens. Just food for thought 🙂

Edit: I meant to say same to fly to Venice, not say Athens twice 🙂

If your on the East Coast (me too!) I would say the Caribbean.  It’s a short-ish flight and $5K should be no problem.

We just came back yesterday from our honeymoon in Barcelona.  The airfare was really inexpensive: 1300 for 2 round trip from NYC.  And we stayed in a nice hotel in an elegant neighborhood for about 1300.    The food is fantastic, shopping and museums are great- so much history and art.

If you want beaches, the Costa Brava or Balearic Islands (Majorca, Menorca) are nearby-  I am a big fan of Spain now!

Also a very helpful guidebook was Eyewitness Tavel’s guide to Barcelona and Catalonia.

Enjoy!!!

@Alsara: Wow! just out of my own curiosity how far in advance did you book your flight? It sounds like you and @MrsMcGyro: got great deals! Fiance and want to head that way in the next few years and I know the airfare changes pretty much daily. We booked our Honeymoon flights in January and they’ve gone up several hundred since then.

I’m going to Disneyworld. They have a beach, an island, and all sorts of fun stuff to do.I know its a little hokey but it should only be about 3,000 for us for 6 nights.

5k is a pretty good budget. How about costa rica?  I went for 8 days on $2500 a few years ago, flights there are really good right now too.  That was a budget trip, but theres a tons of room in your budget to luxurize it to honeymoon standards.
