Next week, my husband and I are driving 6 hours with our 8.5 month old son. We’re trying to figure out the best time to leave. We’re kind of thinking it’d be best to have most of the drive during his sleeping time. So, we need some opinions as our travel plans are flexible. Should we leave right after his first feeding at 7 am? He usually goes for his first nap around 8:30-9. OR should we try to transfer him to the car at like 3 am? OR should we leave at like 8 pm the night before and drive overnight? Opinions? I know 6 hours isn’t THAT long, but it might feel that way with a baby screaming at us the entire time…

I’d probably leave after his first feeding and then after his nap, I’d stop, take a break, let him get some fresh air and whatnot and then start on the second leg of the trip. That way, hopefully he’ll sleep some after getting out, eating/snacking, etc.

My little guy does NOT travel well in the car (same age), so I’d vote for the overnight drive if you can do it. We were supposed to do a 12-hour drive 2 months ago, but we ended up getting plane tickets after a 3-hour “test drive.” That said, I have other friends whose kids do awesome in the car and basically sleep the whole way.
If I were doing it, I’d leave at 8 p.m., get where you’re going and try to get him back down for more sleep once you arrive. If you split the driving, you guys wouldn’t be too short on sleep.

When my children were babies I did the driving at night. They slept the whole way.

@meggyo: if it were me, I’d leave at 3am. I drove three hours with my 8 month old during “nap time” and she didn’t sleep at all. It’s was mostly just her crying the entire time.

I would definitely leave at 8 and drive overnight!

i’m so torn! we had a one hour drive out to the suburbs for a bbq tonight and he was super tired. he just calmly sat there and then eventually fell asleep. i’m kind of leaning towards leaving between 12-3am since he’ll be so tired. we’ll see how it goes!
