- Wedding: June 2014
Wow, it’s been 6 MONTHS already!!! We just finally got our pro pics because we finally saved enough money for them.
We had a summer outdoor wedding this past June. We were on a budget and also really wanted to make the wedding ‘us’. That made for lots of compromise, non-traditional elements, and DIYing. We DIYed practically everything for our ceremony and reception from the decor to the signage. We wrote our own vows, my sister walked me down the aisle, and our friends performed readings that ranged from Dr. Suess to Sex and the City. We prioritized what were necessities to us and compromised on everything else. We lacked lots things you commonly see at weddings (like a photo booth or shot glass favors), but our wedding had a fun and meaningful vibe that was us with outdoor lounging space, good food, cupcakes, and a guest favorite, the shoe game!
My fav moment was right after the ceremony and before we were grabbed for pictures, my husband and I found some quiet time one-on-one on the back deck behind our venue. We got to spend about 15 minutes together alone, allowing time to reflect on the biggest moment in our lives we just experienced and basking in it all together. This was by far my top moment and something I will forever remember.
My top pieces of advice:
Stay true to your vision! We got some flack for many of our non-traditional wedding elements. Once the ceremony unfolded exactly how we envisioned, it felt like us and was that much more meaningful and special to us.
One caveat: Also be willing to go with the flow and be flexible. Some things cannot happen. Be reasonable. The Italian Soda bar I had my heart set on wasn’t practical or cheap; I just had to let go of it. Near the beginning of your engagement, make a list of the non-negotiables with your partner and stick to that. Everything else is negotiable.
Hire a coordinator! That was our single best wedding expense. Being on a tight budget, it’s a hard pill to swallow. But our coordinator was worth her weight in gold. Do yourself a favor and hire a coordinator; the earlier, the better!
And finally…PICTURES!!! Enjoy 🙂
