Anyone have this?
I’m thinking about doing this because recently my husband has been in and out of the hospital and his dr recommends that he not work for a few days after he gets out.
Well, this month, will be a bit rough. He was off almost 3 weeks, last month. He used up all of his sick and vacation time, so if he keeps have trouble with his asthma for the rest of the year, he won’t get paid for it. He’s a salary employee at a restaurant and if he doesn’t work 40 hours, he gets put into the hourly wage.
I hear aflac will pay you if you are sick or out of work… (the commercial). Because of his condition, I’m really thinking about it.

Well, AFLAC has a few different plans, but I’m not sure that it would work in your particular situation. The commercials are typically advertising the “Short Term Disability” policy, which covers you if you are out of work for illness or non-job-related injury. The problem with this plan, in your case, is that there is a minimum number of days your husband would have to be out of work before the plan kicks in (most of the employees at my office have 2 week periods before the policy kicks in). So if your husband is just out a few days here, a few days there, he won’t be off work long enough to start collecting benefits. Or, like what happened last month, he would be paid for one week out of the three he was off work. The other thing to think about is that you have to pay into the policy for a certain amount of time (again, a lot have 6 month waiting periods) before you can file any claims. So he won’t be able to collect anything until he meets that waiting period.
Has your husband talked to HR at his work about his illness? If the restaurant is too small for an HR rep, maybe he can talk to his boss about it? If he has a chronic condition that forces him to be out for certain periods of time, maybe they can work out some kind of compromise so that he will still be able to bring in a decent paycheck.

His company isn’t big enough to have an HR rep. I don’t think his boss can help him other than what she’s done so far, which is allow him to be flexible enough that he doesn’t lose his job. Which I am thankful for.
I know at my job, I would be able to ask for short term disability but I don’t think they have that.
I know we won’t be able to do anything for last month but I’m thinking about the future and thinking having something life Aflac might be helpful. I’ll see what they can do and see if they are able to help us out in the future.
