On Thursday, I’m scheduled to have an amniocentesis. I originally didn’t want one, but due to some ultrasound findings that have my doctor, Darling Husband, and myself very concerned, it’s necessary we find out what exactly is going on.
Has anyone on the board had an amniocentesis done before? I’m quite worried about the risks involved. I’d just like to find out other Bees experience with the procedure as well as recovery after.

I didn’t have amnio, but I did have the other test, CVS. I was able to go with the method that is more like amnio, the needle through the belly, it just takes place about 5 weeks earlier than amnio.
The procedure itself felt like a bad cramp, in fact I didn’t even feel the needle go in because it’s so thin. It just felt like one 30 second long cramp when they were doing the procedure, then it was over. Amnio may be even easier because they don’t have to move the needle as much as they do with CVS…I think.
Recovery was fine, I was a little sore/crampy, nothing a Tylenol didn’t take care of, and a little tired (more from stress than the procedure I think). They tell you to take it very easy, which was great because that’s just what I felt like doing! I made sure to have the day off work and get some movies prepared, then I put my feet up on the couch for the rest of the day and part of the next day. My Darling Husband had to go back to the office, but he was “on call” in case anything started to feel funny and he had to drive me to the doctor.
Best wishes, hope all is healthy and happy with you and LO!

My mom said the thought of it was worse than the actual procedure. She said make sure you don’t look at the US screen because watching the needle was weird.

@beachbride1216: Watching it would be creepy! They actually had me in a position where I couldn’t see the screen at all – don’t know if it was intentional or not. I probably could have watched if I wanted, but I was quite happy to look at the ceiling and Darling Husband. He could see the screen and thought it was cool, but the needle wasn’t in his belly, soooooo 😉

Like @Nickles9911: I also had the CVS not the amnio and had a very similar experience. Just a little crampy when it was happening but then felt totally fine just lounging the rest of the day and the next day. The waiting for the results was far worse than the procedure. Try to stay calm and relax as much as you can. Sending positive thoughts your way!!!

Thanks for your responses, ladies! I’d have to agree, probably thinking about the procedure is worse than the procedure itself. And great idea to not look at the screen when the needle is going in….I imagine that would be pretty creepy. I’ll be sure not to look.
