@mrUnicorn:  We’re doing a DIY chuppah too.  So far PVC is the best bet for stability, but there are lots of options depending on what look you’re going for.  The biggest problem we are finding is set-up/take down.  Who is going to do it for you, and is it going to be an easy construction/destruction that can be done in the given time frame – if you don’t have DOC or someone at your venue to do it.

I didn’t like the look of PVC and realized it would cost a whole lot more in our floral budget to make it look pretty. We ended up going with wood, which we stained. We are having an outdoor, rustic wedding on a mountain, so it fits well. We ended up using crates for the base and wooden poles which are screwed into the corner of the crate. Our florist will use fabric to connect each pole for the top part of it. Made for much easier set up, tear-down, transport, etc. We have a 10lb dumbell weight in the crate to stablize and the florist will cover it with a plant and/or flowers. I’ve attached our inspiration pic and two of what we have so far. Hope it helps!
