I’ve been seeing a career counseler because I’m in an absolute funk at my job. She suggested I go to a recruiter or a headhunter but I have absolutely no idea how to go about that. I also want to make sure I’m going to a reputable place. Has anyone found a job this way? What was your experience like?

Yes, look on linked in and also good ole Google. Search for recruiters in your field and in your city. Some are great, some really suck, but the more people you talk to the more exposure you will have.
They only make money when they place you so they have to think they can place you before they will really take you on. They also dont have your best interest at heart (most of them anyway) so you have to watch out for yourself. They may recommend a job that you dont want so you need to say so.
If they dont contact you, you need to remind them you are there so they think of you when jobs open up.
A head hunter typically works for the employer to find a specific position and at higher levels of management. Where as a recruiter usually works from a database of open positions and tries to find many applicants. Recruiters are the ones you can send your resume to. Head hunters usually reach out to you.
