All you need is iTunes on your computer, which you can download for free!

No special software or hardware needed!

I’d invest in a case, though, especially if he plans on carrying it around with him.  They’re expensive little buggers.

No software, you just sync it to your computer using itunes. One major thing to consider is 3G vs. Wifi since the monthly plans can get pricey, we have a 32GB Wifi only iPad and it is AWESOME

The 3G you pay for internet if you want to use it out. With wifi only you will not have that option.

I have the iPad 3G and pay $15 a month for my internet for it and have only run out early once, and that is because we were driving from Florida to Tennessee and I was playing on it most of the trip, as well as having been out to camp for a couple of weekends in that same month, and was using it to work.

I think it is entirely worth it to have the 3G option as a just in case.

Of course there are much lower priced options in tablets other than the ipad if you are only looking for the wifi. I would honestly not pay the price for an ipad if it is to only use at home to check football scores and such. And honestly the netflix on ipad is not so great, I use it when at my future inlaws and the screen is so small it is not an enjoyable experience.

@roxy821:  There’s also the iPhone to consider…

(I’m a big fan of Apple products, in case you couldn’t tell.)

I love my IPAD ! I would go for the 3G option too , it is worth it and you dont know if you will want it in the future (if you go to the cottage or on a trip or something and you want the 3G option) its pay as you go/need so you dont need to sign up for a year but the option being available is convenient

Both my dad and fiance have the 64G WIFI + 3G AT&T iPad2s (they’re both electronic obsessive and excessive).  They LOVE them.  My dad travels a lot and takes his iPad EVERYWHERE.  Fiance wanted to get the 3G too because he likes having that option, plus he wants us to travel with it.  Fiance and I have AT&T cell service so he said its easy to turn it on and off and get just 1 bill for that and phone. Good luck!  GREAT gift!!!!!!  I wish I could’ve gotten Fiance his but I’m tight on budget this year, so I just threw in his cover for it. haha 🙂

We got the wifi only option, and it hasn’t been a problem.  Then again, we live in an area where free wifi abounds.
