@KoiKove: Not sure if that ryokan is going to be available. It does look really nice though. I keep fiddling around w/the dates but no such luck so far.

@SuperDuperBrit: From their web site it looks like they arent booking for Nov yet. Try emailing them directly. And dont worry about choosing a cheaper room without an attached bathroom. It a small ryokan and there was never an issue with using the shared bathrooms. Only other difference is if you order the kanseki meal, it’s not served in your room. They have a small dining room right off a small garden.

@SuperDuperBrit: Its Japanese dinner. I was bummed we didn’t book a ryokan originally. It would have been an amazing experience. Thankfully we have family friends who have invited us over.
We leave today~! ๐

@Milo: Have a safe trip!! I think we decided we’re going to stay in the hotel my husband stayed at for his business trip. Seemed to be a good location for getting around and it’s nice. Since we’re ending our trip in Tokyo it seems like a good idea to splurge a little on the last place we will be staying. We haven’t booked it yet. I think my husband is going to request time off and once it’s approved we will book things. Pretty sure we are going to stay in a ryokan in Kyoto. We think it may be more authentic because it will be older….but we still haven’t settled on one just yet. We’ll see lol.
Hubs is talking about going to the Tokyo Sky tree……which is super duper tall. I felt anxious just looking at pics LOL! He’s not a fan of heights either so we will see how that goes.

@ConRtist: I think we’re going to go to Tokyo and Kyoto. Nothing is booked yet x_x. My husband’s boss was on vacation so he hadn’t gotten a chance to take time off yet. He’s supposed to be doing that today. He’s the type that’s very go with the flow and he wasn’t “worried about getting time off approved” and I’m very GET THE DANG TIME OFF NOW SO WE CAN BOOK STUFF. >_>….*sigh* LOL, I’m not quite as laid back. The planner in me is like if you don’t get the time off approved than there’s no point in me continuing research, lol. So, hopefully that goes through. We’ll be there for a week and it looks like we’ll be going to Kyoto and Tokyo for sure. We’ve discussed even cutting that down to one area. At this point if I had to cut Tokyo or Kyoto I’d cut Tokyo. My husband has been there already for work so Kyoto would be completely new to him. But, as of this point I dunno that we’ve officially decided to cut it out yet. We may have cut Osaka out because the Castle I wanted to see is apparently poorly labeled in English. It’d still be cool to see but there is a TON of stuff I’d love to see in Kyoto. But, we’ll see. I guess we’re just trying to figure out the most affordable way to do as much as we want. I’m glad airfare should be free. If he gets his time off approved we’re booking the flights asap because if his miles can’t be used we will not be going. I’d love to go to Japan but I can’t currently justify making what will probably cost us $3,000 double because of airfare, lol. It’s just a really pricey trip. In the event that we couldn’t go to Japan using airline miles we’d switch to Italy and see if that was possible. I guess right now I’m just in a waiting period lol
Hopefully soon I will have some updates to report back. I really appreciate all of the help! Hubs said he’s putting in time off today (told me this morning).

Happy to announce that our flights have been booked and all but 2 days are covered with hotels, lol. We’re still looking for ryokan options. We’ve found some but they’re really pricey. We may just splurge on one we both really liked and just stay a night. We’d extend our other Kyoto hotel by a day and be done w/planning. We’ll see o_o. We also still need to get our JR train pass but we’re gonna do that soon.
We’re coming Japan! =D
We will land in Tokyo, stay there for 2 days, take train to kyoto, stay in kyoto for four days, and then take the train back to tokyo for another 2 days. BAM.
We’re thinking that the day before our last day in Japan we may zip on over to Tokyo Disney for the day. Our last day in Tokyo we’ll check out of our hotel, have the hotel hold our bags all day while we explore, go grab the bags, and then head home.
Pretty excited about the trip! Our airfare ended up being dirt cheap thanks to airline miles. I’m talking like ~$150 for 2 roundtrip tickets to Japan. Come on November ๐

Sounds like a great trip ๐
Ryokans are amazing and well worth staying at.
I know you are probably a littleover planning but I like this website when I’m looking for Ryokan http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/ryokan-search-results/?area=Kyoto
They have a lot of different price ranges ๐

@ConRtist: thank you! I will look over the site later. We’re still trying to pick out the ryokan and I am, like you said, over planning. I just kind of want to find one and be done with it, lol. I’m ready to just go and enjoy Japan, lol.

@ConRtist: Our trip was AMAZING! We had such a grea time. We ended up flying into Tokyo, stayed there for two days, took the bullet train into Kyoto, stayed there for four days (2 in a traditional ryokan and 2 in a regular hotel), and then took the train back to Tokyo for 2 more days. Oh man, it was the best.
Here are a few pictures:

Us at the Golden Pavilion (stunning in person!!)

Us at Fushimi Inari Shrine (boy were we tired after that….we visited two other sites beforehand and this shrine is like 2.61 miles long).
I’m about to walk out the door to take our new pup to the vet but I’ll try and share more later!!! We had the best time.

@Kimberley25: Thanks! What part of Japan did she move to? It’s a wonderful country — everyone is so polite and friendly. We had a really good time.
We stayed at Yuzuya Ryokan in Kyoto and had a traditional kaiseki dinner. That was a wonderful experience even though both of us didn’t like everything food wise, lol! We were good and tried just about everything though! The next morning we had traditional Japanese breakfast too and our last day we had western breakfast. The food there was pretty outstanding. The ryokan ended up being right next door to a shrine, lol. We were dropped off via taxi and were like woah what is that!?!? lol RIGHT NEXT DOOR. SOOOO cool!

@SuperDuperBrit: She’s in Akita-shi, Akita. A mid-sized city. She’s been doing traveling as well. She and a friend are spending the holidays in Seoul.
