I’m finding out the hard way that no quartet will charge less than $650 in the Northern NJ area.. 🙁

I am a musician and I used to play in a lot of weddings.  If you want a quartet for an hour the going rate is about $100 an hour per musician plus incidental fees like travel, music arrangement, etc.  I have NEVER been tipped as a musician in a quartet, so tipping is NOT neccessary by any means.

Some other ways to cut down your music costs is to ask for a trio or duet rather than a quartet, contact local universities/colleges and find out if there are student musicians there – they are often cheaper.

$500 is on the cheap side for a quartet – I know it seems like a lot but you have to consider these things:

1.  Instruments are expensive to purchase and maintain.  For a small overhaul of my flute it can cost me $500.

2.  Musicians spend hours practicing and preparing so that they sound good on your special day.

3.  Musicians can only play for 2 to 3 hours at a time – it’s not physically possibly to play for much longer because you they actually end up hurting themselves by playing for too long.

4.  This how they make a living.  There are only so many Saturdays in the summer and they can really only book one (sometimes two) weddings in one day.

I hope this helps.  Try the universities or local conservatories – you might get a younger group that charges less.  Avoid quartets associated with Symphony Orchestras as they are offent affliated with a union and there are additional charges that go along with that.

Hmmm I live in NYC and I hired a trio for 2 hours for $855.  I hired a flute, violin and cello player and they are playing for my ceremony as well as my cocktail hour.  I’m not sure if you’re going to find them for under $500 unless perhaps they are students????  But good luck!
