Fiance gives this thread a +1! He’s a paid spotify user (i.e. he’s able to use it on his iPhone) and loves it. He’s been trying to get me to switch from my trusty Grooveshark to Spotify but I don’t like change. GS has been totally sucking lately though so maybe I’ll think about it.

@Jeannine @ Small Chic: You can’t believe everything you read. From my Fiance, who has been a Spotify user since day one… “All it does is cache music locally on your computer, it doesn’t upload it to other people. It’s just cashed so it plays faster.”

I read about this elsewhere…that link just had a nice summary. It’s saying that it uses everyone’s Internet connection to run the cloud. That’d be fine, if you could limit how much it takes. Spotify does not seem to let you limit it’s use of your connection, so it could slow your use of the web, your downloading of files, and other Internet activities. Per the comments, it can interfere with VOIP…which makes me think it might bump you off a VPN, too.

Most Bit Torrent clients let you set a limit so all of your bandwidth isn’t dominated.

some Internet providers have talked about slowing down the connection of people who use a lot of bandwidth or charging differently for those who are heavy users. Sine some say Spotify isnt up front about the P2P stuff, most users here probably don’t even know why their Internet might be slower.

@MsPanda: Oh, definitely. It has lots of awesome features. Connecting it with FB is you allowing other people to share your music. It doesn’t do it on it’s own like @Jeannine mentioned.

@Jeannine @ Small Chic: Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I’m sure there are lots of people out there who aren’t comfortable using these services. That’s totally fine. I happen to like them. They’re conveinant, user friendly and you can pretty much listen to any song you can think of whenever you want to. I think that’s pretty rad. I trust my FI’s judgement when it comes to these things (he’s somewhat of a “tech god”) so if an application has his seal of approval it has to be good.

I’m not an IT expert, but I have a good amount of experience with P2P stuff and I found the GeekWire article interesting. Not trying to take on Spotify, just a little concerned about it.

Of course everyone has opinions. That’s what makes this board so fun! 🙂
