You can’t get him to send the money through paypal, or another more secure and private means?  Paypal is the best, because the only things I think they can see are your email address and whether or not the money went through and was accepted.  If you feel uneasy about the money order, then do it a different way!

Creepy…. I don’t trust anybody over the net.  Can you get a PO Box for him to send the check to?  Or what about Western Union.  I think you just pick those up at the Western Union office.  If it were me I’d lose the sell over having to give out personal info like that.

Can he ship it to your work?  Or also I like that PO Box idea!

I wouldn’t do this! Money orders can be fradulent. I would accept a cashiers check or PayPal ONLY. It is worth it to lose the sale to have peace of mind, IMO.

I think this sounds like a scam…I would be very very careful.

I would only take paypal..

I have worked at a bank for almost 10 years..and people get fake cashiers checks/money orders all the time!!

I would not take one.. It is super easy to get set up on paypal..it’s safe for both parties involved.

If you do take the money order, wait until it’s cleared from the bank before sending the dress..(that can take up to a month!)

I think that sounds nice.  If he gets offended by that then he really is strange.  I hope it works out, but you are really smart to keep your information safe!!!!

I have never heard of someone paying by money order unless it is a scam. I got an email like this for my listing on OnceWed. It’s not from a Billy Powell or bestglobalfabriics by chance, is it? They will send you a money order for some ridiculously high amount and then ask you to refund them the overpayment. You send them your legitimate check and they’re gone by the time the bank notifies you that the money order is bogus. Or some such variation. I would be very, very careful if I were you.

I think you handled it well.  I think the only way he won’t respond favorably is if it was a scam, then it’s not a loss anyway since you didn’t get scammed.

DON’T DO IT!  I was almost scammed when i tried to sell a dress through ebay… they ask for your address to send a money order, then they tell you that the money order is more than what you asked because the difference is supposed to go to the guy who is accepting the delivery, you just have to put the money order in your bank and send the difference to the guy accepting, but the money order is a fraud…  it will clear your bank right away, so you feel comfortable enough to send the extra money, but when the bank inspects it more closely, they reject it, and take all the money they initially put in your account out.

you responded beautifully… i was young and foolish and allowed it to get to the point where the money order was sent, but while it was on the way, i changed my mind, and told the guy i wasn’t comfortable with the transaction and i was going to ‘return to sender’ when i got the money order.  he sent me a fake FBI email saying i was going to be investigated for internet fraud (obviously copied from ones that he probably got himself), and after i sent the money order back, it came back to me saying the recipient refused to accept the delivery.
