Like many people here, I’m really obssessed with these beautiful lace-detailed cakes. But now that I’m looking at my budget, I just have no idea how I’m going to be able to afford the cake I want, much less any cake at all.
Here on Cape Cod things are crazy. The local baker down the street from me has been featured on TLC and her cake starts at 5.25 a person. It seems pretty much the going rate here is $5 a slice. I just don’t understand. That’s ridiculous.
Anyone have luck with Costco cakes or something? I really had my heart set on a cake….

@memleyxx: I’ve definitely read about brides who have had Costco cakes. I personally love them, and if you like them then it seems like a good compromise. However, don’t give up on a wedding cake just yet. You can always get a smaller show cake with a couple of tiers and decorated beautifully for display and cutting then have sheetcakes in the back for serving. Also, check out Craigslist to see if there are any talented but unknown bakers out there. Is there a culinary school anywhere nearby? You can check out the possibilities there as well. Good luck!

@memleyxx: I hear you on cake prices! I learned that the design/detail can drive up a price exponentially. Try to keep it more simple, something that can be piped instead of fondant created to keep the price down. I personally love Publix cakes. Or maybe you know someone who bakes? There are tons of options out there and you will get your beautiful cake.

- Wedding: April 2013 - Rhode Island
Our cake was priced at $4/person, and it ended up being between $300-400. I actually thought that was really cheap. Not sure what you were expecting…I love the lace cakes too but this is what we ended up with. In the end, I cared about a lot of other things more than the cake. I loved our cake and thought it was perfect! It was a total surprise too. I had no idea what it was going to look like, except I knew it’d be round and 3 tiers.

Well who knows! How was I supposed to know cake was so expensive before I started planning the wedding? Haha. I think it catches a lot of people off guard. I was thinking more like $2.50 a slice. Everything in the industry has been a huge shock in terms of actual costs.

On top of the cake cost, a lot of caterers charge by the plate to cut your cake as well! It’s definitely a huge racket. i hope you can find something that works for you!

@memleyxx: You could always have a smaller cake made “for show” and then use a sheet cake to pass out. A lot of venues do this anyway and it will probably save you money

Update! I found an awesome baker who quoted us at only $580 for the whole cake, so we signed on the spot. She has great reviews, the cake was delicious, and she said the appliques were no problem at all. Score!!
