It’s pretty common but still expensive I saw some online for $200 for the fake cake rental
Personally I like the normal 20-30.00 cakes at my local bakery so I plan to order 3 with I ivory roses and put it on a cake stand, should only cost me 100 and I feed everyone 🙂

It’s the norm here. We are just ordering a slab cake to serve, that one is going in our freezer.

Fake cakes are the norm here. You cut a real tier on a fake cake, then have the actual one people eat be a sheet cake. Much more cost effective. And you can make some pretty crazy fake cakes too.

Have you thought about doing a small one tier cake for you two to cut and then have cupcakes from Costco or Sams, you could decorate them yourself for cheap too! I have seen a lot of the fake cake, but like some previous posters have said, be careful because sometimes they are just as expensive!

I had a friend who had an entirely “fake” wedding cake made up for show, served cheesecake to the guests and cut the groom’s cake for the pictures. I’m having a small 2 tier real cake but another sheet cake hidden in the back that’s a different flavor from the wedding cake. Both are money savers!

I think it’s pretty common but we priced it out and it wasn’t much more to get the cake we got.

I attended one wedding where the bride was a pastry chef and she had a fake cake tier (I think there were 3 tiers). And she didn’t do it budget puposes just the aesthetic of the cake.

Never heard of this “Fake cake” craze, but what a great way to save on $$. We’re doing pies in place of a cake just bc we like pies better. But, this is a great idea. Thanks for sharing.

I think if it saves you money, go for it. I’m doing something similar to keep costs down. I’m ordering a 3 tier cake that will serve 75 and a sheet cake in the back that will serve 100 from the bakery. It ended up saving me $250 as opposed to ordering a larger tiered cake.

Nothing weird about that, anything to save money! who knows if you would eat all the cake anyway.
I think I’m just going to have a tiny cake to cut and the rest as sheet cake to serve, or maybe cupcakes. I’m actually going to attempt to learn cake decorating and make it myself, we’ll see how that goes :p

I’m having a fake cake because I wanted a big cake and am having a small wedding! haha I decided to go for 5 tiers for 50 people! It was just easier then to have a completely fake cake as we are having Martha Stewarts rainbow cake as the kitchen cake.

@secondchances:I would’ve made my own, if I could do it all over again. Our cake was sooo expensive and boy was it a waste of money! We ended up not getting what we wanted at all, and had so many leftovers from it that it was ridiculous. Honestly I only had a small bite of it from when my husband shoved it into my face and that was it, and our guests didn’t have a whole lot of it either.
I think the fake cake, while it may seem a bit bizarre at first, is a great idea for that reason. From how our wedding went, it seemed that guests are really more interested in the actual cake cutting than they are in eating the cake. Especially if you have a separate dessert on top of the cake.

Our baker has some pre-designed fake wedding cakes that you can rent (and then serve sheet cakes). The only drawback for a fake cake is if you have a specific design you want and aren’t flexible using a pre-designed cake. Our baker told us that it’s the design you’re paying for in most cases so if you want a specific design on a fake cake, you could still end up spending some big money.
We’re not doing a fake cake but after seeing some of her fake ones, I can see why some people would.

I saw this vendor at a recent bridal show
She does rentable cakes that are absolutely gorgeous. They look very real, and very elegant. She will ship nationwide too. Basically you can have a cake that looks like it cost $1000.00 for about $175, then you can serve from sheet cakes which cost much less. The added benefit is that the pretty cake remains intact for the whole wedding. She even has a little notch in the back of the cakes that you can insert a real piece of cake into, so that you can do a fake out, when you are doing the bride/groom cake cutting ritual.

I have a question. I’ve seen a few people all over WB say that “guest will never know” that they’re getting sheet cake and not the actual presented cake.
But, wouldn’t it be obvious? Wedding cakes are usually round and heavily decorated (fondant, royal icing designs, etc). Sheet cakes are square/rectangle and iced. I’m confused.
