The reason people love solitaires so much is because they are simple and classic. So what she said isn’t rude in any way, in my opinion. Were you hoping she would be more wowed by your ring? I think no one will ever be more wowed with your ring than you are because you get to wear it. I absolutely love my solitaire and while some may not think it’s dazzling and has the wow factor, that’s fine by me. I wanted simple, classic, and traditional and that’s what I got! So enjoy your ring! Even if it is simple, it’s still beautiful.

tinneranne2 : haha yes, ‘congratulations it’s beautiful’ is my standard response now

I’m probably a lot older than you, so take my advice: Never keep anyone in your life who uses adjectives like “simple”(cheap or stupid) or “thick”(in the head). That person thinks she is better than you, she is not a good friend- nobody who gives backhanded or ambiguous”compliments” belongs in your life!

I mean, it’s a solitaire ring. It’s beautiful in its simplicity. Tone can’t be conveyed in text. I can see how it could have been meant as a compliment.

I also have a solitaire on the “smaller” side. It’s slightly less than half a carat. I love it, but I think most girls (or at least the ones in my circle) expect large, very blingy rings. So the comments about how small and “itty bitty” it was rolled in. Not gonna lie, at first it was annoying as heck, but I guess not everyone likes my style and that’s ok. As long as I like it, I’m good. However, my wedding band is going to be “blingy.” Lol

The nerd in me really wants you to post a picture of the ring now so that I can comment that it is SIMPLEly beautiful 😉

I love my solitaire because it’s simple

If someone makes a comment like that the best response is “I know, isn’t it great”. Just take it as a compliment and move on with the discussion.

yupmarried : … wait, so “simple” is code for cheap or stupid? So I guess women who describe their own style as “simple and elegant” are actually saying they like looking cheap and stupid? And honestly, you can’t get much more simple than a solitaire unless you go for a plain band. You’re reading way too far into this. For all we know OP’s friends like simple jewelry and don’t like the current trend of pave everything to hell and are complimenting her ring.

I think of simple, classic, elegant and timeless. This beats the comment that I posted/heard on another Wedding Bee discussion. “How many Cracker Jacks boxes did he look thru for the ring?”
