You should know now that the women in the bridal store will tell you anything and everything to get you to buy a dress. Changing your dress from a line to trumpet is definitely changing the structure and style of the dress, and while it can be done, it will be costly. And now that I see your dress, I know it will be costly. You have lace thats in a particular pattern, and changing the style will change the look of the lace, and it may not line up properly in the back. I think lace dresses are much harder to alter in this way. That said…

There are SO MANY dresses out there! If you know you want a trumpet gown and lace, then go to bridal stores and ask to only try that style on. This dress is absolutely beautiful, but that does not mean you won’t find something you love equally that actually has everything you want. Bridal stores love to tell us we can turn the “almost” gown into the “one”, but it’s just for the commissions.

I agree with arenyth.  If it was a small fix, then I would go for it, but changing the entire shape of a dress – especially one with such a detailed, embelished lace pattern – is probably more hassle than it is worth.  I would keep looking – there will be many other beautiful dresses that fit the description for the dress you are looking for!

I wouldn’t disregard the possibility of having it altered according to the shape you want.  The dress you are looking at would be easy to alter the dress under the overlay to be a more fit and flare shape, but the overlay may be more complicated.

I would contact a seamstress (not a bridal salon) and get an opinion from them.  I would never trust a person in a bridal salon a)to be honest and b)to actually do that kind of work on a wedding dress.

Looking at the dress, it looks to me like it would be super easy to make it a trumpet .  My sister had a similar dress and hers was easy and not that expensive to convert to a trumpet.  I think that dress as a modified trumpet would be stellar!  It’s not like you’re changing the entire dress – all they really do is take in a couple of inches around your thighs.
