Christmas will never be the same for me! HE PROPOSED!!! This has been looong in the making (as in 8 YEARS!!!), so I had already told him that whenever he does propose I probably will not be surprised and will certainly not cry. Oh how wrong I was!
Apparently he bought the ring a few months ago and was just waiting for the perfect proposal time. After being together for so long, I thought that I would know exactly when he’s planning to do it and would have to try to act surprised. I mentioned to him that if he really wanted the surprise factor, he should not do it on an obvious occasion, so he joked that he would just have to “ambush me.” Though I thought that a public proposal would never be his style, because he’s not a big fan of crowds.
On Christmas Eve we always do a special dinner with my parents and then go to midnight Christmas mass. Although he is not Catholic, the midnight mass has become a very special thing for both of us. Before dinner and mass he was acting a bit antsy, but I didn’t really think anything of it. For a second, a thought crept in that a proposal on early Christmas would be perfect, but since I had mentioned to him that I didn’t really want a proposal in either one of our parents’ houses and didn’t think he’d ever propose publicly, the thought went away. At the end of the mass everyone sang Silent Night, which I absolutely love, and we started walking outside talking about how this was going to be a special magical Christmas, because they had predicted a lot of snow (it usually does not snow where our parents live). We walked outside and were standing on the steps of the church (the one we had already talked about getting married in!) when he turned me around, kissed me, and told me that I was his best friend and he could not imagine his life without me… Kiss… Then his voice started cracking a bit and he went into the second romantic sentence, by which time I realized what was going on and was in (pleasant) shock, so I don’t even remember exactly what he said… He dropped to his knee and to my surprise asked me to marry him in my native language (apparently my brother had taught him how to say it and the reason he was so antsy the whole day is because he was nervous that he would forget or mispronounce it)!!! So it was just fitting that I answered in both languages. My parents were standing right there… My dad was taking pictures, my mom was jumping from joy, and then the whole crowd clapped. I felt like in a dream…
So contrary to what I thought would happen when he proposed, I was completely surprised, excited, moved by such a personal proposal, and cried like a little girl! 🙂 I was so excited that I even forgot to look at the ring for about 10 minutes, until he asked me if I was going to look at it to see if I like it. 🙂 It was truly magical and special. I was so happy that he did it on Christmas, because we were able to share the excitement and joy with our families. On top of it all, we had a white Christmas! And yes, I also love the ring!
