Hi bees, I just returned from my honeymoon and will post full NYC area vendor reviews shortly, but just wanted to quickly drop in and give a shout out to our amazing honeymoon resort in Dominica. They are fairly new and the island in general is still largely untouched by tourism development, so we promised to share how incredible a place it was.
My husband and I have been to most of the main islands in the Caribbean(Bahamas,Bermuda,Jamaica,Dominican Republic,Aruba,St Lucia) over the years and almost exclusively to all inclusives. We have always had a great time and felt pampered and well relaxed when we returned home.
That said, we knew we wanted something a bit different for our honeymoon andDominicaandSecretBaytruly exceeded all our expectations. It is unlike any other “resort” I have ever seen. It’s not really a resort at all but rather 4 private luxury villas literally built into the rainforest.
The island itself is incredibly safe and we basically spent our time kayaking up and down the bay, flopping onto secret beaches lined with coconuts (we literally saw not another human once on any of the beaches we visited), and visiting locals bars and restaurants along the way.
The people of Dominca are warm and friendly and welcomed us into their homes and were so happy to share their culture. My biggest complaint when visiting theCaribbeanis how the resorts are blocked off from the rest of the country, hiding the real island behind the gates.
Here there were no gates –SecretBay is in the midst of it all and the people of the local community(Portsmouth) seemed very happy to welcome its guests. We visited local farmers markets, bush bars in the middle of the jungle, and were taken on hikes by locals to waterfalls andhot springs. We did not meet a single other tourist our entire trip – to give an idea of how the secret is still not out on this country.
The honeymoon villa is unlike any accommodations I have ever seen and we could not believe how affordable it was. Maybe because SB is still new or because Dominca is off the radar, but we had budgeted 5k for our 5 day trip and when we found Secret Bay we were able to come in way below budget including airfare PLUS 2 nights in San Juan, Puerto Rico(there are no direct flights to Dominica, you have to layover on another island).
Here is a panorama of the honeymoon villa:
The staff is available for any and all requests including grocery shopping, arranging excursions and meals prepared in your villa. They were always ready with a smile and they made sure our stay was amazing.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
