When I decided to go with moissanite more than two years ago now, I did so much searching around on the Bee for other’s experiences and pictures. It helped so much to see the pictures of everyone’s lovely rings on their hands. (I’ve included quite a few pictures, so if you’d just like to peek at pics, scroll on down. We all do it, no judgement ) I thought, now that my fiancé and I have made two MoissaniteCo purchases, I would write a post about our experiences, including the process of shipping to Canada. Hopefully a few people find this helpful!
My engagement ring is sol369, in rose gold, customized with double prongs. The stone is a 9×7 (2.2ct eq) fb oval, and my finger is a size 8.5. My fiancé actually found it in the sale section on MoCo’s website. It was listed online as a size 4.5, and my fiancé emailed and asked if it was possible to size up to my (fairly large lol) finger size. This is my only frustration with my e-ring. They told him they could size it up to the 8.5 requested, and did not mention any concerns. When it arrived, the bottom of the ring where they altered the size was super thin, barely a millimetre thick, although the top of the ring was fine. We never contacted them about it, however I do wish they had mentioned that this would be the case with such a drastic size change. This could definitely also be something that we should have known regarding working with gold jewellery, and not a fault of the company. In the two years I’ve had it, I’ve never had an issue it at all and it’s looked beautiful every day that I’ve worn it.
In terms of the oval moissanite itself. I love it so much, and I love the amount of sparkle ovals have. Second only to rounds I would imagine. I have gotten tons of compliments on it, and have never wished I made a different choice. (For what it’s worth, most people definitely think its a diamond, although I don’t try to pass it off as one, and have educated many people about moissanite lol.) It definitely shows colour. It’s whitest in artificial/ fluorescent light, and shows the most colour in indirect sunlight. It’s never bothered me once, but if you were really colour sensitive, or specifically looking for a very white stone, this one would not be it. I haven’t noticed any changes in the stone itself due to wear. Whenever I actually get around to cleaning it, it looks just a lovely as it did when he proposed.
Some of the pics I’ve gotten with it showing the most colour. I actually think it’s neat! There’s definitely one that looks pretty ugly… but it only ever looks like that in my parent’s living room for some reason…
I just got my custom wedding band dropped off by FedEx today! It’s a half-eternity band, with 9 round fb’s, alternating 3mm and 2.5mm stones, done fully in rose gold. I found a diamond one I loved in a local jewellery store, but I didn’t love the price, so I thought I would see if MoCo could make one for me. My initial reaction: I love it! I think its beautiful, and its exactly what I wanted. Its pretty darn blingy, but that’s what I was going for! The ring isn’t perfect, there are small imperfections with the prongs, some being a little close together in some places, a little farther apart in others. I think thats the thing with MoCo, they’re a great budget option. If you’re looking for absolute perfection, you’d probably be better off with a local high end jeweller. The small imperfections definitely aren’t something that bothers me, and I’m not going to complain or send it back.
Final CAD they sent me
On to our experiences working with MoissaniteCo. On the whole, I would say average to slightly above average… I don’t really have any complaints about the process, but there’s definitely nothing above and beyond either. Sometimes the responses were very prompt, other times it took 2-3 weeks to hear back. I also wasn’t thrilled with the communication when it came to the fees regarding the customization. I understood that they charged a one time $150 fee for a custom design. Nowhere on their site or in our correspondence did they mention a limit on the number of changes you could make to a design. They did charge me an additional fee on the third change that I requested, which I didn’t think was very fair. (Maybe three changes makes me really high maintenance? I didn’t think I was asking for major alterations, just to change the sizes of the stones… I obviously have no experience with jewellery, so I don’t know what constitutes a substantial change.)
The shipping was quite quick considering it was coming to Canada (under a week.) I was charged $17 by FedEx for duties and taxes, which isn’t bad at all. I am in Alberta, and I’ve heard its cheaper to ship here. Could be rumour though.
Overall, I love my set so much, and I can’t believe I still have to wait three months to wear them together! Going to be so difficult…
We spent about $2500 CAD total for the whole set (would have been cheaper if the rates were better )
I know this is a super long post, sorry! Hopefully it’s helpful to a couple of people who are looking around, trying to decide if it’s worth it to go with moissanite or MoCo. Hope everyone has an awesome day!
