My daughter’s 16th birthday is coming up next month, which I can’t believe. Where does the time go? For years, I wanted to do a special ring with her birthstone for her “Sweet 16”. When I floated this idea to her, she was all for it. But she wanted a dragon ring of her own.You guys know I love a challenge and dragon-themed jewelry, so I thought it was a fantastic idea. I went to David Klass with my ideas, and we went back and forth on different things for a few months. I think I started the project in early June, and I got the email yesterday that the ring was done.
My daughter’s birthstone is sapphire, and her favorite color is pink. We chose a pink Montana Sapphire for her ring. She wanted a smaller stone, so we purchased one that is around .40 ct equivalent. I wanted to have the ring in an “ouroboros” type of design, and my daughter wanted to use Kohaku from Spirited Away as her dragon inspiration. She chose black gold for the ring, and I added in some cherry blossoms to represent the state of VIrginia, where she was born and grew up. This was a last-minute, sentimental, touch because we recently moved to a new state.
And finished pictures. These are screen grabs from the video DK sent me.

Aww that made my heart feel all warm. My birthstone is sapphire and my mother made me a beautiful ring for my sweet 16 as well. That’s beautiful and I love the cherry blossom detail ❤️❤️❤️

Your projects are gorgeous and I love dragons. The Kohaku ring turned out amazing and detailed–from the belly scales on the inside to the tail fur wrapping around the stone and the delicate horns on his head! You put so much symbolism in her gift, I’m sure your daughter will love her Sweet 16 present!

missmonroe711 : Thanks so much! I’m super excited to see it in person, and hope my daughter loves it. How sweet and special that your mom made a ring for your Sweet 16, too. I love the mother-daughterness of it and think it’s a wonderful tradition. I was happy with how the cherry blossoms turned out. It was a detail that was important to me, and I knew it would be important to my daughter, too, as this has been a hard move for her. But I was worried they wouldn’t turn out okay.
SabL22 : Thanks so much! I hope she will love it and wear it often. =)
naturalbee18 : I think so, too! DK did such a great job on it. I was blown away by the plastic model, but I feel even more that way about the finished ring.
citizenerased14 : Thanks so much! I’m actually the lucky one. My daughter is an amazing person, and she fills my world with so much joy.
theambereyed1 : Thanks so much! Going into the project, my daughter wanted a fairly simple ring. You know how I can go overboard with the details, which I love. I’m amazed at how much detail got packed into this simpler design. I think the tail fur wrapping around the stone is my favorite part. It’s so delicate and pretty. I hope she will love it and wear it often. I’m already planning my next project, which will be a “goth-themed” ring with a garnet center. It should be fun!
Spiritway11 : Thank you, thank you!! *cyberhugs* I hope she has a great 16th birthday. I feel like I’m the lucky one to have such an amazing daughter. ^.~
