My fiance proposed with a small diamond (my birthstone) in a modern setting that his family helped me nickname “Chip.” We found a ring that’s more my style — vintage style, cushion cut stone, and it’s an amethyst surrounded by diamonds. What do you think? Would you ever consider a non-traditional engagement ring? Interestingly, sapphires and rubies were once common for e-rings.

I have a non-traditional ring and I love it to death…if I couldn’t have a good 5 carat diamond then I didn’t want one…and we’re not that well off so I wasn’t getting that!

I love amethyst and would love it as an engagement ring (then again at this point I’d take scrunched up tinfoil–not even shiny side out). I can see precious stones other than diamonds gaining popularity presently. Aside from being more affordable (which is always a great thing), they can have a special meaning to the engaged couple and allow brides to express individuality with color if they like.

I love it. I definitely don’t think that an e-ring has to be a diamond. My only question would be, how will you get a wedding band on with it? Is the setting high?

Thanks for your lovely comments! Amazingly, we spent 1/20th the cost of our wedding (we are on a $10,000 wedding budget). Thus, leaving us more to spend on a down payment on a future house…

I have a sapphire ering. There are a couple of threads around here about colored stones, like this one: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/non-diamond-engagement-rings

P.S. My dad’s family has an old bishops ring as the family engagement ring. I believe it’s a 3+ carat amethyst with a wide gold band. It’s beautiful!

I have a non-diamond engagement ring, because, well, it was my dream ring and I adore it. 🙂

Oh my goodness that ring is gorgeous!! I fluctuate between the “different” rings and a solitaire! It’s awful being indecisive!! Guess I’ll love whatever Cam gives me, though!

Yes! I have a sapphire engagement ring, I love it! No offense meant to anyone, but I think diamonds are kinda boring and I want some color in mine.
