My Fiance is a die hard Pens fan and I am trying to think of what I could incorporate into our reception related to his interests. I like the idea of having some hockey related elements but nothing too over the top.
Our wedding will be at a country club with gorgeous mountain views-outside ceremony (fingers crossed!) Below are my ideas-none of them set in stone, so I’m really looking for your opinons on what I should keep and what ideas I should throw out the window. I’m not sure that if I did it all, if it would be too much or too cheesy or too random!
Wedding colors are a plumberry and pinks with the guys in tan suits. I’m sticking with those colors and am not interested in a black and gold wedding!
1) Penguins cake topper (This is a cute little topper that has 2 penguins sitting on a bench, I will probably get this regardless since A), It’s adorable and B) They are penguins on a bench..and we got engaged on a park bench)
2) Hockey Themed Escort Cards (pucks or game tickets)
3) Pens players names/numbers for table numbers
4) Menu/Timeline at each guest’s seat (Intro, 1st period, 2nd period, 3rd period, OT, etc.)
5) Bar named “Penalty Box Bar” with Signature drink- found one called “The Stanley Cup” (I also really like this idea)
6) Guest Book options-hockey stick or jersey that everyone signs.

I think it all sounds awesome!!
But I’m a huge hockey fan lol
I love the cake topper idea!!!

I’m a flyers fan… But I’ll help 😉
I love your ideas so far!
i think itd be adorable to incorporate penguin pucks in the decor. You can even make the platform of your cake topper a penguins puck.

GO CAPS! (Sorry, had to 😉 )
I think this all sounds good except for the escort cards. I think there’s kind of a line of TOO MUCH, and I sort of think of a birthday party when I hear hockey shaped cards.

@KateByDesign: haha, I will admit…part of me wants to have the pure joy of watching my many Crapitals, I mean..Capitals fan friends see all this 🙂 We live in the DC metro area!
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated!

@LavenderBride24: I’m a huge hockey fan as well but I’d be careful as not to confuse your wedding’s theme. Mixing fancy with a sport is a bit tricky.
1) Penguins cake topper Cute idea – I’d totally do this
2) Hockey Themed Escort Cards Does this fit in with your theme or would it just look weird to people?
3) Pens players names/numbers for table numbers Again, this might confuse people
4) Menu/Timeline I think this might make your wedding seem a bit kitschy unless it was hockey themed throughout
5) Bar named “Penalty Box Bar” I’d only go with this if you do the hockey theme throughout. For people who aren’t hockey fans, “penalty box” sounds like a bad thing.. which is not good for a wedding
6) Guest Book options I like this idea because it’s a bit quirky and it would make a great souvenir, but it isn’t really part of the wedding decor as a whole so it’s ok to do even if you don’t work in other Pens touches.
So basically I think that you need to do a lot of hockey stuff if you’re going to do it, so you’re consistent throughout, or just do a couple small touches like the guestbook and cake topper. It’s nice of you wanting to work the Pens in for your Fiance, but I am not sure it’s such a good idea beyond doing a couple small items.

I love this thread so much ahaha.. being Canadian I think it’s hilarious that there would be any confusion for guests not knowing things like penalty boxes and player’s names. My Fiance is a die hard (and I mean DIE HARD) Leafs fan so my challenge has been trying to keep the team OUT of the wedding, lol. He is getting leafs cufflinks from me as a groom’s gift though!
I think the game tickets as escort cards are really cute, and I love incorporating the penguins with the cake topper! Maybe call it a “Sid”gnature drink? *ba dum ching!*
Maybe instead of using player’s names/numbers for table numbers, you just use that typical back-of-a-hockey-jersey font for your numbers (but keep them in your colours)?
Maybe there’s something you can incorpoate if you’re doing a kissing game? I toyed with the idea of ministicks and being able to score before the bride and groom will kiss, but I worry that some of the drunker guests might do some serious damage, lol.
There’s always those fun hockey pens (Pens pens!) that guests can use to sign the guestbook.
This is so fun! I love it, haha.

Huge Pens fan here! Love that you want to incorporate it into your theme. I think a nice small touch is enough though. Don’t over do it because then i start to think its a birthday party or something. I think the cake topper is the perfect small touch without over-doing it.

@canarydiamond: So, here’s the thing..I figured that including some of the items above will be a “theme”. I am not really going for a fancy/shabby chic/ vintage romantic/ carnival/ this or that theme of any sort otherwise. It’s a wedding- at a country club-outside ceremony and indoor reception in a ballroom. I guess what I’m wondering is, for me to do all of this..do I need to incorporate hockey into the ceremony?
So, in order to have this as a theme I need to do all this plus more? Or, just do a few small things and not really try to tie the whole hockey idea in.
If it helps- a majority of our guests will be from the Pittsburgh area- so they will undersand 🙂

@sanjessica: I’m cracking up at your “Sid” gnature drink comment! Too funny. Thanks for the other ideas. The kissing thing actually annoys me at weddings, but it’s something to keep in mind!

@sarg88: Thanks, I love the cake topper and really haven’t found anything else I like. While it is a Penguins cake topper- it’s not affiliated with Pittsburgh otherwise, so if I’m going to kind of go for a theme, I’ll need another thing or two, I would imagine!

@maplemag: +1. Go Flyers! (well anything Philly related really lol)
OP, I think using little things, like the cake topper, excort cards, etc, to incorporate a favorite sports team is cute! My Fiance loves anything Philly so I’ve been trying to find ways to bring in some of the sports. Do the Penguins have a theme song? You could use that as your introduction! We are using the NFL theme song (thanks to another bee’s suggestion!) as our intro to the reception since my Fiance and all his friends are huge football fans 🙂

@IzzyBear: thanks 🙂 The Pens do have a theme song, but it’s not very appealing to me. i have thought about having the hockey goal horn sound played when we walk in, ha. Still up in the air about that one!
You should check out etsy for sports touches for your wedding. While i’m more into the Pens myself, I do plan on getting a Miami Dolphins garter as a surprise to the FI- his other favorite team 🙂 Cuff links are another idea, or dress socks (something else I’m thinking about doing for the Dolphins.

@KateByDesign: +1 ..(go caps) but agree with the rest as well!
