D’s never been for good surprises. Whether it was my birthday or an anniversary, I always managed to either make him divulge his secret plans or I’d find his hiding spot. 🙂
But August 3, 2009 was different. We had spent the past two weeks desperately trying to save the lives of 8 beagle mix puppies we chose to foster through the Humane Society. I woke up the morning of at the oh-so-wonderful time of 5:00 a.m. Looking like I literally rolled out of bed (because I had), we went outside to feed and care for the pups. While D went to go “fill up the water bowl,” I started to work on some homework. Consumed in my work, I didn’t even realize he had been gone for an usually long time. When he did return, I looked up to see one of the little pups, Brucey (who I happened to have the closest connection with after carrying his near lifeless body into the vet’s office to be put on 24-hour i.v. watch and then returning to see he had in fact survived) running around the corner. He had a bright blue ribbion tied around his neck, which I found odd, but didn’t really think twice about. As Brucey’s sister Betsey proceeded to try and yank the ribbon off, D apparently got impatient and yelled “god, Rachel, are going to go see what’s on the ribbon or WHAT?!”.
It took me a while to realize what was going on…seeing the diamond ring and D getting down on one knee all just seemed a blur.
I never had a vision of what my “ideal” proposal would be, but, looking back on it, I couldn’t imagine anything more fitting, more romantic, or more “us” than this. Needless to say, when I was brainstorming what username to use for this site, Miss Puppy Love only seemed to fit.
