I used to be on levoxyl (very similar) and my mom has taken synthroid for years. from what i have experienced and from what I know about my mom there shouldnt be a reason your period is late from using the medication…BUT I just googled it and a lot of people have experienced late periods from what I see. Some people said theirs was a few weeks late while others say they missed a whole month. Hope that helps some!

@KateByDesign:  I agree! keep waiting for your period. If it doesnt come in a week or so (I know that seems like forever when your TTC) then test. I hope you get some good news soon though 🙂

Menstrual issues are a known side effect of Synthroid and thyroid replacements medications.  Since you just started it, your body is still getting used to it, so I’m not surprised it’s delaying your cycle.

@KateByDesign:  Any time your hormones are messed with, your period is going to be messed up. I’ve been taking Synthroid for 5 years now and when I first started taking it, I noticed it took a few months for my body to regulate itself.

Also, hopefully your doctor told you this, but be sure to take it at the same time every day, in the morning, with no other pills, and wait at least 45 minutes before you eat or drink anything except water. I know people who make the mistake of taking their Syntrhoid with coffee or with other medications and it will affect the efficacy of the Syntrhoid.

i’ve also been on levoxyl (i’m off of it now, due to some issues), and it messed up my cycles for a good three or four months at first. even though i was on birth control, it still screwed it up. i think it’s just one of those side effects. i hope you get it figured out soon!

@KateByDesign:  Any kind of food (yes, including coffee!) can increase the amount of Synthriod that is absorbed from the GI tract, thus making less available to actually get into your blood stream.  It also has a lot of interactions with other drugs, so don’t take it with anything else, even something as simple as a multivitamin.

I’m on Tyrosint which is pure levothyroxine with no fillers. My periods were irregular, unbearably painful, super long and heavy. The first couple cycles things stayed the same, but each cycle improved thereafter and now my cycles are regular to the day, shorter, and don’t lay me out for days. They used to be so bad I would curl up under my desk at work with pain that only a prescription painkiller would knock out.

Levithyroxine saved my life – the alleviation of intolerable irregular periods is simply icing on the cake.

As for food, wait one hour before eating and avoid anything with calcium for 4 hours since it binds with the hormone and your body won’t absorb it…

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism last June 11th..our 4 year marriage anniversary (we didn’t have a wedding…so i call it marriage anniversary we). Before being put on meds…my periods were regular. after meds…my periods were all over the place. they started the last week of month…and then moved up one week each month. i have been on birth control since January and my periods are regular again. don’t stress over periods and meds. the thyroid regulates alot of organ systems…including the reproductive system. it’ll take awhile for the meds to start working.
