I think you should just accept it with extreme gratitude. She knew how much she was giving you, its impolite to tell someone you can’t accept their gift (it will imply you think they don’t have enough money to give you said gift).

I would accept it, and give her a nicer bday gift when that rolls around. It would probably make her feel bad if you refused her gift.

Not accepting the gift would be very insulting and offensive. Cash the check and thank her profusely for her gratitude. I’m sure she wouldn’t have written a $200 check unless she really wanted to give it to you.

I say accept – it would be pretty rude not too!

@redbride:  Accept with gratitude and write her a very nice heartfelt thank you note.

You are not really in a position to judge what she can and cannot afford to give you.

If you can be, it’d be nice to be a little extra generous this year at her birthday, but I wouldn’t just write her a check back of the same amount.

Accept with gratitude!  And generously gift her on her b-day.  Sounds as though she cares for you a lot!

Just accept it.

I’ve found that in life, the people with the least amount of assets are usually the most generous.

Accept and send her a very nice, appreciative thank you note. Remember to do the same for her when life events come up in the future!
