I should have known something strange was going on when I woke up on my birthday morning… and there was no present! Sam absolutely LOVES giving me presents and I couldn’t believe that he could actually wait all day to give it to me! He told me I would receive my present later in the day, so I shrugged it off and looked forward to the surprise (…and what a surprise it would be!).
In the morning we looked at beautiful Christmas ornaments and trees, and then had a tasty lunch in a cafe. It was lovely… but still no present! I’m not one to ruin a surprise though, so I went along with everything and didn’t nag him (while secretly wondering what my surprise was going to be!)
After lunch, we got in the car but he wouldn’t tell me where we were going! He made my close my eyes for the last 10 minutes of the journey, and then when we finally arrived I opened my eyes… we were at the Harry Potter Studio Tour! One thing you should know about us is that we LOVE Harry Potter. Some of you may find this geeky, but we love the idea of such a magical world.
I was SO excited and pleased, especially as they have decorated the Great Hall with Christmas trees and laid out food for a Christmas feast! At the very beginning, I was called to the front because it was my birthday and was allowed to open the huge doors to the Great Hall. I knew that Sam must have arranged this and was so pleased that he had sorted out something so special for me 🙂 if only I knew what was coming next!
It took us about an hour and a half to walk around the tour, and being such a huge fan I took my time looking at every intricate detail. In hindsight, Sam was a little disinterested and distracted, and kept rushing me! We saw the props and the costumes and the castle… and then at the end there is a room filled with 14,000 wand boxes, each labelled with a different name.
A tour guide approached us.
“Do you know what all the names are on the boxes?” He asked.
As a HUGE fan, of course I knew! “Yes,” I said smugly, “They’re all members of the cast and crew.”
“Yes,” he said, taken aback. “What we like to do is ask your name, and see if we can find one to match. So, what’s your name?”
“Rachel,” I said.
He pointed out a ‘Rachel Smith’, and described he role as a set designer. Then he pointed out another Rachel, apparently involved in the casting process.
“If you follow me,” he said, gesturing to a stack of wands a few feet away, “I think there’s one more Rachel.”
Now, at this point, I was thinking I didn’t really need to see any other Rachel wand boxes, but I humoured him and followed him across the room.
“Oh. My. God.”
Tucked in among the thousands of wand boxes was a box WITH MY NAME ON IT ‘Rachel Ledesma’.
“Here we’ve got ‘Rachel Leedsma’ he said. Obviously he pronounced my name wrong, but I didn’t correct him. I was too shocked.
He handed the box to me and I opened it with shaking hands. Inside was a wand, with a scroll of parchment wrapped around it… and a ring!!
I just stood there, shaking for about five seconds before Sam took my coat and told me to read the note. As soon as I read the first line, I burst into tears!
I cried and cried and seeing tears in Sam’s eyes too, I pulled him into a big hug. In all this time, neither of us had spoken!
“Is that a yes then??” The tour guide asked anxiously. It was only at that moment that I realised that about 40 or 50 people we standind around watching us, some of them visitors to the studio tour like ourselves but most of them excited staff!
“Yes!” I laughed and everyone cheered and clapped!
“Put your ring on then!” Sam laughed.
“No!” I said, thrusting the box at him. “You have to put it on ME!”
So he did 🙂
The next few minutes where a blur of crying and laughing cuddling, and people coming over to congratulate us. Before I knew it we were out in the car park and I burst into tears again – it was such an emotional moment.
I can’t believe he came up with such a unique, romantic, surprising and special way to propose to me. I’ve been walking on air ever since, and I’m so happy to have a such a wonderful story to tell 🙂
