I’m engaged! It’s been almost a week already! In some weird way, it feels like both an eternity and a matter of moments all at the same time.
We had discussed marriage, getting engaged, etc. before, and we both knew it was what we wanted (and with each other), but I did not see it coming when it happened! We have a significant date in October, and I had it in my mind that that’s when it was going to be, so I (fortunately) never had to experience the dreaded “waiting” or “why hasn’t he yet?” phenomena.
However, I feel like I DID walk around a little differently lately when he would have surprises for me, e.g. “What’s Friday like for you? I have a surprise,” or, “Let’s get ice cream and go watch the meteor shower.” (Adorable, no?) BUT I bet he totally took advantage of that because it happened at a time that I would literally never expect it.
We board my horse at a local facility, and we always take care of the barn on the weekends. So, Saturday morning, I was in my ugly jeans, my hair was braided, and I wasn’t wearing any mascara to cry off, lol! We were standing in the pasture while the herd was eating their breakfast when he wrapped his arms around me from behind with a ring box in his hand, and he asked me right then and there! I lost it! Hysterical giggle fit. I even stopped myself and was like, “Yes! I said yes right?! Did I forget to say yes?!”
His plan was to get to the pasture before I did – and he did – and tie the box around my horse’s neck, so that when he came up to greet me, as he always does, that I would naturally reach for it to see what the heck was attached to my horse. BUT he told me that he wasn’t cooperating with him. I attribute it to his nervousness confusing my horse, but I didn’t tell him that, of course. Either way, I’m over the moon, and it gets better.
He proposed with “decoy rings.” I am pretty nontraditional, but I do think it’s cute that he got the idea partially from my father. My dad proposed to my mother without a ring and then took her shopping for whatever she wanted. My now-fiancé proposed with decoy rings that he selected himself to be thoughtful and geeky, just like us, and he told me afterwards that we could go home and I could show him the “ring I’ve always wanted.” This way, no surprises were ruined by letting me be involved in selecting it, and we have a few cute little tokens to remember the day.
Anyway, here they are. Enter the geekery! The ring on the left reads “Together we will rule the galaxy” a la Star Wars, and the one on the right is from the “I love you / I know” set from ThinkGeek, a la Leia and Han from Star Wars. The box is probably my favorite part, ha! It’s a nod to The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, complete with the Elven script on the inside. Delectably geeky.
Since we decided to buy my ring online, and because there’s no time crunch since we’re already engaged, we opted to first purchase the stone, and if we love it, we’ll return it to be set. My Amora moissanite is at Fed Ex RIGHT NOW. I wrote this post to help distract me since they don’t open for another half hour, ha ha! I want to put the Amora through the paces of ugly lighting, cloudy days, etc., but more on that later!
