So my life long dream was to have a huge formal evening wedding… Until I started planning it. I realized at that point I did not want to deal with the hassle of a big wedding and decided to completely flip it. We are now having a smallish wedding (60 confirmed and I’m sure a few more will crash it) at the beach in the morning.with the total flip I also flipped my dress from a fancy princess style dress to a beach cover up from Victoria secret. Now my cover up is cute don’t get me wrong but now I am 1 week away from my wedding and wishing I had a real dress. My fear at this point is being too fancy for the rest of the wedding party, ( our guys are in boardshorts button down shirts and fedoras and the girls are wearing pink slightly dressier sundresses) what should I do?
If I get a new dress i would still wear the coverup for the after party
Sent from my iPad sorry for type-os

Honestly, if you can find a dress off the rack that works I’d say go for it. YOu’re getting married – you can be dressier than your wedding party! You might have luck at J.Crew or a department store if you don’t want something SUPER fancy/princessy – DB is also having a huge sale right now.

Well you could try going to a second hand place or buying off the rack and see if you can find a dress that needs no alterations. The only thing is you’re likely going to be very busy this week, so it will be hard to find time to search for the perfect dress that also fits you.
I bought my dress second hand and it needed no alterations. I got it around 2 months before my day, but I could have easily bought it a week before, it wouldn’t have mattered.
I was worried my dress was “too fancy” for my rustic wedding too, but everyone told me I looked perfect and matched my venue very well. I think it’s pretty hard for the bride to be overdressed. 🙂

I would get a fancy dress if that is what you want, it’s okay if you are fancier than the rest… you are the BRIDE! Go for it!

If a new dress makes you happy, then go for it! I don’t think a bride can be overdressed at her own wedding, especially if you choose something from an upscale deptartment store. You can also call around to bridal salons and see if any dresses fitting your theme are available to immediate purchase and take home. A flowy white dress is so pretty for beach themed weddings. I say go for it and do what makes you happy.

Bitter sweet update,
I went dress shopping this afternoon and found the dress of my dreams! It’s the perfect mix of fancy spunky and beachy. Here’s thebitter sweet part. It is totally out of my price range
Here is the link for the dress
Does anyone have any ideas of cheaper alternatives I can find?

I don’t know what size you are, but what do you think about this? It can be delivered to you in a week. Maggie Sotteros are always less expensive than Jim Hjelms…

Beautiful! Thanks but they don’t have my size. I found one on Craig’s list Ireally like but my OH doesn’t want me to be more dressy than him so now I’m confusled again. I don’t think it’s too dressy but I don’t want him to feel uncomfortable about it. (he’s super metro and loves dressing up and they are in board shorts)
Here is the “wedding board mash up” I made the mermaid one is the one I want and the tea length is my back up plan what do you think?

I’d say do whatever makes YOU happy. It’s your day. 🙂 good luck!

@Punky bridester: Do you have a picture of the Craigslist dress? I think you should go for the dress! I mean, you don’t want to look back on your wedding day and regret the fact that you never got to look like a bride, you know? Maybe the OH can dress up as well! Or is he happy with just the board shorts?
