First, I’ll start with this. I like my job. It’s really two separate jobs rolled into one. I work as a physician, and I teach. In a lot of ways, I have the best of both worlds of community medicine and academic medicine. At times, though, that means I have a lot more of a balancing act to do. This is one of those times. I have quarterly events that have a HUGE leadup and preparation. I am basically stressed for an entire month before. I had specifically communicated with leadership about the scheduling of these quarterly events and had discussion about 6 weeks ago. It was scheduled a full month before my wedding. Then, today, I hear from a friend/colleague that it’s scheduled for 4 days AFTER my wedding. Wait, WHAT?!?! I email to confirm. Yes, sure enough, it has been moved. The admin was supposed to contact me (and of course never did!).
We are not going on our honeymoon right away. Why? Because I have another MAJOR work commitment two and half weeks later. I simply CAN NOT commit to this event 4 days after my wedding. I am always SUPER stressed in the weeks leading up to it and I had tried SO hard to schedule things to avoid that. On the other hand, our group is already so male-dominated that I hate even saying I’m getting married because I feel like all anyone thinks about is the maternity leave I’ll (hopefully) eventually be taking. UGH.
