llevinso :  The doc talked about his wife went and asked them to drop the kidnapping charges or she’d expose both the parents for having a sexual relationship with Bob. So they basically dropped the charges becauses they cared more about what people thought about them.

I agree with everyone. It was crazy, disturbing, sad, and infuriating.  Just when you thought it couldn’t get any crazier…it did.

EllyAnne :  Right but that’s basically the only mention of her. Like…did she know ALL of what was going on (she obviously knew at least SOME of it)? Where are their children in all of this? What happened to her? Did they stay together? Divorce? Were their kids also molested? 

ETA: I actually tried to Google/Wikipedia Robert Berchtold but the only thing out there is stuff on this documentary and Jan’s appearance on Dr. Phil. It’s very strange that there is no additional info.

I have a really hard time believing that the parents were just infuriatingly naive and oblivious, or were even manipulated or “brainwashed”. I wouldn’t even say they failed their daughter…they DID this to her. There are some evil parents out there who just don’t care. There is no way they didn’t know. They’re playing the victim card because it makes them look “less bad”, but they had to have known what they were doing. I maintain that they’re not dumb, they’re EVIL. They prioritized their selfish relationship with B that they’d sacrifice anything to keep him around. I can’t believe these wicked people got off the hook as being simply the “dumbest victims” known to man”. I’d definitely be investigating those parents further.

Also, making kind of a stretch here,  but parents of the 70’s often seemed really detached from (if not straight up abusive to) their kids. Both of my parents had careless parents. I remember my mom telling me about a time when a complete stranger slapped her across the face, in front of my grandmother, because my mom was talking back to my grandma and the stranger felt compelled to step in and discipline her. Rather than flipping out on the stranger (as I’d imagine any of us here would), my grandmother just sat back and let it happen, watching smugly.  My Mother-In-Law had an even worse experience of her mother letting abuse happen. It’s like they were all getting high off extreme self-absorption back then.

There are so many disturbing and horrible people in this world who should NOT be having kids – those two people were a great example!!! That child must be so damaged, I cannot even imagine how traumatic her life has been knowing how evil her parents were.  Just sickening and so disturbing.

 im surprised the mother wasnt charged with anything, i mean she slept with the guy then let him take her kid away for a second time, i dont know about the laws back then but now a days i feel like she definitely would have been charged right along with him. Sad. 

im also surprised jan still has any form of close relationship with her mother considering how careless she was the entire time.

EllyAnne :  Just insane!  I wonder if she’s so desperate for her parents’ love and attention that she is not willing to see how abnormal and deranged they truly are.  To say that they are the “bravest people she knows” is really hard to believe!

Me and my husband watched this last night and were shocked. Especially since the guy got away with everything pretty much! Spent only like 10 days in jail after being charged with felony kidnapping. Like what even???!!!
