I saw this right after I saw the Ted Bundy Tapes (don’t ask, recovering from the flu) and the contrast between the two documentaries was interesting—Honestly, Abducted sickened me more, which is a frightening thought. I think it was the fact that he was RIGHT THERE, they knew him, etc. Both made me think about the power of trust/seduction.

Was B a leader in their church? Perhaps that would explain why they were so tolerant of his bullshit.

This is a key detail that was not explored at all in the documentary. However, I noticed when they mentioned it and I thought that it explained a lot.

For ex, it is likely the Brobergs met Berchtold through the Mormon Church, which would foster a sense of trust between them from the very beginning. The fact that the Brobergs did not want their affairs to come out publicly also makes a lot more sense in light of the fact that they were Mormons–assuming that they were able to go to Temple, if this had come out their Temple recommendations would have been revoked. And the fact that Jan believed the alien storyline fits with what Mormons believe (i.e. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_cosmology).

Because of this, I think the way they portrayed this whole tragedy as just a very naive couple getting taken advantage of doesn’t hit the right message exactly. Many child molesters and abusers are ppl who are very trusted or even in the family itself and the grooming they do to gain access to children over time isn’t as in your face as pervert B’s was here. 

The fact that this guy barely spent any time in jail for raping children infuriates me to no end.

This couple knew exactly the bargain they were making in order to keep their lives, their business and their reputations intact.  They knowingly sacrificed a child for this. There are no words for them.

I’ve seen it and it’s very screwed up. My guess is that the parents were so naive. People weren’t as wary of paedophiles back in the 70s sadly. Far too trusting. Wrong on so many levels
