ugh…so I’ve been engaged for four years and just recently my fiancé came up with the idea of having a destination wedding in Uruguay since his family lives there and they are hardly ever involved in parties and other events back home in Florida due to the distance and cost of travel. So, I happily agreed especially since I was under the impression that weddings in Uruguay are much cheaper than Miami. Ha! Was I wrong! I hired a wedding planner and advised that our budget was 10,000. Long story short, after crunching numbers our budget has doubled!!! With airfare, venue, photos, hair and makeup, everything we are looking at 20,500!!! I don’t know what to do anymore. I get anxiety just thinking of spending that much money when I have bills to pay! I haven’t given any deposits but it’s too late in the game to cancel. I already hired a wedding planner for 1500 and bought my dress and veil for 1300, plus the family is excited. Should I just bite the bullet? All the other venues are horrible! I’m so torn. I feel like I’m being selfish spending so much. But this wedding would be a dream come true. It would be everything I ever wanted. 😟

You’re saying all the other venues are horrible. Sorry, but you can’t poo-poo cheaper venues then whine about the cost. Either cut your costs down, spend the money, or don’t have the destination wedding. It’s that simple. I’d be stoked to have a Destination Wedding for 20k.

How about looking at somewhere inbetween the two locations – that way you still get the destination wedding but it could work out cheaper elsewhere? Or do you have your heart set on Uruguay now?
I’ll admit I was always “I don’t care how much money my dream day costs we’ll figure it out” until we started planning and I REALLY thought about it.. it’s ONE day!

How much will it cost to have the wedding in Miami?
And how important is it that the family un Uruguay can come?

It might be so expensive because you have the wedding planner (personally, coming from a poor country, I know that hiring an event planner would drive costs way up). I suggest ditching the wedding planner and asking your uruguayan family to help find a nice low-cost venue, a hair-dresser and a photographer.

We are having a Destination Wedding and won’t be having a wedding planner. If you have one of the best rated venues in town then they should be able to organise a lot of the logistics for you if you request it.

Also you can negotiate with the venue. The Destination Wedding quote we were given was $25k but my partner got it down to $15k plus lots of freebies included. Also you shouldn’t reveal your nationality when you are first negotiating Bec they might charge you must more if you come from a ‘wealthier’ country. We lied to the venue and said that my parents live in the Destination Wedding country so they wouldn’t mess us about or excessively rip us off. (White lie- my parents use to live there but not anymore).
